XP 2800+ / 433 FSB?

Hey there,

I just picked up an Asus A7N8X, two Corsair XMSPC3500 DIMMS (512mb ea), and an Athlon XP 2800+, but am now wondering if it's even feasible to O/C the CPU's FSB to 433mhz in order to run the memory in Sync mode (thus utilizing this memory to its fullest potential).

An advice/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Well if you could, then I would be impressed. That would be one huge overclock. I hope you have water-cooling. You would be increasing the FSB from 166 to 217.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well...

But, I noticed the nForce2 tests done here used the PC3500 RAM as well, although I didn't see anything mentioned about loss of performance due to this FSB Sync issue (as noted in the article mentioned in my first post). In fact, the TH specs seem to refute the other article, causing me to be even more confused. :frown:

I feel like I'm either missing something or I just have to wait to plug 'em in and see for myself.

Thanks again,

-lok

I doubt you ever get it that high without unlocking it and lowering the multiplier.

And even then a FSB of 216MHz is really high. I never heard of being able to push the FSB that high.

My CPU runs so hot the arctic silver undergoes nuclear fusion  .

Hmmm... Bummer!

So, did I miss this part in the TH review? They were using the same RAM (shipped with the board), but made no mention that the extra overhead (and cost) was for naught.

So, I guess the question now is whether to scrap the RAM (return it), or run it at a lower speed... ?
Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks,

Keep it, unlock the processor, and go for 200MHz. That would still be insane. I think the EV6 bus is only rated for 200MHz anyways, so that would be a more reasonable goal.

Yeah, it would be pretty nuts...

As mentioned earlier, I doubt I could do it without water cooling though (at least), which I'm not really into.

I'll currently be running the ThermalRight SLK-800 (with a Thermaltake Smart Fan II), inside a modded Lian-Li PC-71 (one 120mm Vantec Stealth input on the door, one for output on the lid... plus the case's 4 standard 80mm fans), on an Antec True 550 PSU. I'll also be housing my 2 10krpm SCSI drives (36gb ea) inside individual 5.25" coolers (I'm not as concerned with cooling my Ultra ATA drives).

It should stay reasonably cool, but probably still not cool enough to hit 200 comfortably...

I'm primarily using the system for 3D graphics (3DS Max), so I have to be a "bit" conservative with the O/C, as stability needs to be top priority.

As for holding onto the RAM, yeah, the more I thought about it, the more sense it made... especially since it has the lifetime warranty.

Cheers!

what about overclocking the fsbof the a7n8x to 400mhz and getting Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB PC3200 400Mhz 64Mx64 184 DIMM Cas2 you think the proc would handle 400mhz with a AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 2.133GHz 333FSB Processor x6.5 locked = 2600mhz air cooled gotta be in sync!

With aircooling you will never reach that. Maybe 2.6GHz if you're lucky. And ecven then only a few % of the 166MHz FSB CPUs reach 200MHz.

Hi, i wanna know why my athlon xp 2700+ on my asus a7n8x, don't reconize by itself by the bios (1001.C)i just can boot up maximum up 2600+ (2070mhz), I DON'T KNOW WHY? i really need help. when i just set the manual configuration to 13x by 166 the system never set the speed above. in otherwise i unlock the processor and even persist the problem. let me know someboady
