I recently installed an Amd xp 2400 on my system.
When i first installed the heatsink and fan i placed the heatsink on the processor and installed the clip.
I was not sure the heatsink was sitting square so i removed the clip re-positioned the heatsink and applied the clip. It looked better.
Did i destoy my thermal pad by doing this.
i re-positioned the heatsink without turning on my computer.

Now i`m running the XP 2400 at CPU FSB of 133mhz.
With just the operating system running my CPU temp is
49 deg celcius. Is this too hot?

eeeeks.
Thermal pads are once off use items.
Upon first heating they melt and form a contact between the core and the heatsink.

Shold you take the heatsink off its HIGHLY reccomended you scrape off the pad and replace it with some kind of thermal grease.
If you look at the pad its now got an imprint of the cpu die in it, and if you dont put it back on exactly right there could be big airgaps between the pad and the core. very bad.

The thermal pad had a very faint imprint of the die in it.
The pad was brand new and the system was never powered up.
So upon re-positioning the heatsink and powering up the system should the thermal pad then melt and not have any air gaps between the sink and core
