unlocking problem

I have an athlon 1600 that I have just unlocked but the only thing that happened was when i restarted the board (asus a7v8x) showed the processor as a 1700 but does nothing when i set a new multiplier setting. C an anyone tell me what im doing wrong?

are you sure it was unlocked properly?
did you properly insulate the gaps before closes the bridges?

does asus still have "jumpermode" and "jumperfree mode"?
if so, and you are in jumperfree mode, perhaps you change the mult through the bios?
