How to run carmageddon on Windows 7 64-bit?

I downloaded a free version of the first carmageddon game and apparently it is only compatible with Windows XP service pack 2.

I am running windows 7 64-bit.

I've read that there is a trick to getting it to work.

Could anyone help me out?

I haven't run Carmageddon for ages (though I may well dig out the CD's...) - As it's so old, DOSBOX may well be the wrapper app you need - presuming you have already tried the windows standard compatibility modes...

Yes, I've tried running it in different compatibility modes and it still doesn't work.

I've downloaded DOSBOX but I have no idea how to use it.

Perhaps you could walk me through this?

I have the free downloadable version of carmageddon and not the CD version.
