We are a non-profit without a lot of network expertise. We have a Sonic PRO
230. A T1 line comes into a SBC router and then into the Sonic wall. We use
the DHCP server in the Sonic to dynamically provide IP addresses. There are
a few static IPs set. There is about 150 addresses available and the lease
expiration is set to the standard 60 minutes.

Internally we have about 25 computers in several workgroups all connected to
three switches and the Sonic output. We also refurbish computers. Perhaps a
dozen times a day, we connect these computers to the network to test the NIC
and make sure we can connect to the Internet. The next day we would do
another dozen computers.

After several weeks we noticed that computers on the network can no longer
acquire an IP and connect to the network. We usually notice this first with
the computers we are testing. Computers on the network seem to work fine
until someone shuts one down and restarts it.

The Sonic still shows many unused addresses. However, we shutdown and reboot
the Sonic and every thing works again. It appears as though some how we are
using up the available IP addresses but cannot figure out why this is
happening. Nothing in the Sonic logs or status pages looks unusual.

Looking for insight and suggestions. Thanks

I'm not sure about your Sonic, but I've seen this in many inexpensive
firewall devices that have a specific number of licenses for the units -
once you power cycle them it starts over.

Check and see if your unit has an unlimited number of licenses or a
fixed number. If I were you though, I would have 2 public IP addresses
and separate the networks, use the sonic for your business and install a
Linksys router on the second public IP for the testing group.

I looked at the literature and apparently they allow the following:

Unlimited number of users
Concurrent connections: 30,000

Seperating the testing with a seperate router might be a very good way
around the problem. It is worth a try.
