Volcano 7 WOW!

I noticed my cpu was running a bit warm so I went out and bought a Volcano 7 cooling fan with the variable speed control and all I have to say is WOW! I'm at least 10 degrees less! I'm running at about 41'C idle and 48 'C full throttle! My only question is is this fan suppose to run at around 2800 rpm? Seems kind of slow to me but then again, it is pretty big. Anyone else's volcanoe run at this speed?

Mine (the auto-temp controlled version) runs around 3900 rpm at 39'C, so possibly your controller is set at the low speed level. I'd suggest keeping it there too! It's pretty noisy at the higher rpms...

Do I look like I care?

Well it seems to be doing its job, the higest it has gone is about 2900 rpm at 47 'C. As the temp goes up a little so does the fan. When I first start up, the temp is so low that the fan only spins at about 2100 rpm and sets off the fan alarm for not spinning fast enough in the asus probe program but thats ok, the cooler the better. Nevertheless, I'm totally inpressed with the cooling effect of this fan. Keep in mind, I found it makes a HUGE difference when you have 2 chassis fans. One to bring fresh air in at the bottom(usually front of the case) and on at the back to exhaust the hot air. Before I did this I would have motherbaord temp of around 35 'c. Now its at 21.(I have my PC in the basement where its cool to begin with)

Unless you are having cooling problems, keep the fan set to slow and QUIET.
QUIET is nice.

And yes, even 1 slow speed casefan can make a considerable difference

That depends on the fans that lian-li use.

My antec "superflower" fans are very nice. allmost as quiet as my panaflo's.

Ive heard that lain-li casefans are loud, but have 3 stage slowdown switches on them. (high, med & low)

The volcano 9 or 7+ is better.

I also have a volcano 7+. I have an Athlon XP 2700 running at 2800 speeds. I normally keep the fan on medium, its not too loud because im normally listening to music. On medium it idles at like 32c and heavy load at like 38. Only time i got it 40c+ was with the fan on low and a few hours of ut2k3.

I don't have any control over the speed on mine. Its all automatic. It has its own sensor. I really like it though and would recommend this fan to anyone!

only problem with that fan is the thermal sensor's positioning... its placed right on the edge of the fan, and therefore doesn't measure the CPU's true temperature... The Volcano 9 deals with this problem by giving a thermal probe that fits under the CPU - a lot more accurate. You can always make the wires longer on the probe and place it closer to the CPU core, at which point you'll notice the fan's speed working more appropriately with the core temperature.

Ahhh! It's 2003 and wait, whats this!? My computer didn't blow up! ... Well damn, there goes my new Athlon @ 333FSB and my inssurance claim... heheheh

That is the best one... although the fan control is not as good as the Volcano 9 the cooling ability is higher.

My PC eats so much money that I'm in 'desperate' need of it to buy PC3500 RAM, help Svol with his OC project!

Common - thats an easy question - the Volcano 9 (hehehe, with cool mod). What wins me over with the Vol9 is the fan... now, yeah, i know, the Vol7 is copper and all, but if you could cross the two... hmmm. But stock heatsink alone, i go with the Volcano 9.

I think it does come wit a thermal pad or a small tube of that white thermal stuff.

'Course it does... also comes with DowCorning Thermal Interface material... though I wouldn't really recommend... the pad is a bitch to take off once its been put in place (I had one my old Volcano 7) and the artic silver just provides a better solution.

Is the fan that comes with the Volcano 7+ any good? I was planning on buying a Delta FFB0812EHE to use with the heatsink. My processor is an Athlon XP 2800+.

Yes, I would recommend it to anyone. Very Quiet at its normal operating speed ~2400 RPM. This fan has a temperature sensor that senses the case temperature, not the chip. It just is hanging right outside the heatsink. My case is about 21 'C so the fans spins at about 2400 RPM which keeps my cpu at about 40 - 44 'C depending on the load.
