I've got my hands on a factory unlocked thoroughbred 1700+. I'm not sure what its problem is but I can't seem to get it to run stably past 1.73GHz :( First of all it seems like I have to super charge my cpu voltage to get anywhere - right now I'm running 1.8V to achieve 1.73GHz. For some reason my system isn't stable at all when overclocking through fsb, incrementing it even by one makes 3D games crash (even with default 11.5 multiplier). I'm thinking that my AGP card can't handle any changes at all... so right now my cpu is running at (13x133=1729). Any higher isn't stable. What gets me though is that my cpu temps are very cool. I never get above 32C under full load. I'm sure this is partially because I keep my computer in the basement with an ambient temp of 21C. I really have no idea what I'm doing wrong, I feel that this cpu should be able to go a lot farther, esp with such cool cpu temps. I hope someone can shine a little light on me here, I'm just simply confused. With the fsb maybe I'm doing something wrong too... anyone wnat to help me on how to make the thing go any faster??? :|

System Specs:
AthlonXP 1700+ thoroughbred OEM
Thermaltake 7+ (w/ ArcticSilver3)
Asus A7V8X-A (using on-board LAN)
Crucial 256MB DDR333 (@CL2 2-2-6 w/heat spreaders)
Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2 GTS (will upgrade in a month or so)
Creative SB Live!
Western Digital 80GB 7200rpm SE (8MB cache)
US Robotics 56K modem
Sparkle 350W psu
and of course a cd-rom and cdrw drive

I got the cpu to run up to 1.76GHz under 1.9V, 1.83GHz even... but again, for some reason, 3D games would crash after about 5-30 min of playing. A friend of mine runs his same exact cpu more stably than mine under 1.76GHz... the only real difference is the graphics card (he's using a geforce3).

Please give me some suggestions, thanks!

Do you happen to know the core code and week stepping of your cpu?

I too have an unlocked TbredA XP1700+, a 'AIURA' 2002 week 47 chip.
and can get the following speeds/voltages.
1466mhz @ 1.4v (11x133)
1500mhz @ 1.4v (9x166)
1583mhz @ 1.425v (9.5x166)
1666mhz @ 1.5v (10x166)
1733mhz @ 1.575v (10.5x166)
1833mhz @ 1.7v (11x166)

Notice to get 1733mhz and then 1833mhz requires alot more voltage.

Im running a epox 8K3A+ board, and i stick to only FSB's of either 133 or 166 where the PCI & AGP speeds are perfectly in spec thanx to the 1/4 and 1/5 dividers.
I too have issues with elivated PCI speeds. e.g. anything beyond a fsb of 140 gives problems (35mhz PCI).

If i were you i would set the multiplier low and just run at 166FSB. 10.5x166=1733mhz is a good speed.
As you have a 7+ cooler it isnt likely that its overheating or anything, its more likely it just isnt terribly overclockable.

Well, I might think that its just the video card that doesn't react well, since it is a GeForce 2 (its older). Now, when you increase FSB you increase the northbridge speed, and you might need to cool that northbridge with a mounted fan, window fan or northbridge chipset cooler (Thermaltake Crystal Orb, Zalman "Northibridge Cooler"). It might also be that your graphics card just can't support the FSB. Otherwise, it might be the RAM that can't handle the FSB (might have erros... check it with memtest86 (www.memtest86.com) or just a wondeful glitch in your mobo... seems mine has a couple of those too, heh. Hope it helps !

Ahhh! It's 2003 and wait, whats this!? My computer didn't blow up! ... Well damn, there goes my new Athlon @ 333FSB and my inssurance claim... heheheh

My GeForce2 MX can handle an AGP bus of 89MHz... so I doubt it is his videocard.

My PC eats so much money that I'm in 'desperate' need of it to buy PC3500 RAM, help Svol with his OC project!
