From the very limited info you gave us, I'd imagine it to be a heat problem. But then again, it could be anything as we don't know what you're running.

with the info provided my first guess is ram, but you need to tell us what has changed. was it fine before? when did it start doing this? what did you do differently? and like asked before, you need to give us specs.

I am not exactly sure when it started. I built the computer myself about a year ago or so. It was running perfectly fine. It has just started in the last little while. I reformatted and re partitioned about 4 times now and that has done nothign. I though it mihgt be a driver problem. I am not exactly sure. It did not used to do it

Has it always done this or just recently? Have you made any changes recently? Added any hardware?

Is it only when you try to install a game? From CD?

I had a cd drive just up and die on me once... it happens.

oh, sorry i forgot to clarify that. It is not only from a CD. it is when ever i am doing somethign big. Ex. Installing a game, Running Web Cam, Recording sound. It must be a problem with the ram then. I am not sure though. Thanks for the help

Open your case and check your CPU fan. Make sure it's still turning. I also had a cpu fan die on my on a duron 1100 system when I was setting it up. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get through the windows install until I noticed that. The cpu was overheating like crazy. A new hs/fan fixed that right quick.

If it is this, do NOT touch the heatsink for a while. It gets damn damn hot. I burned myself.

Take the cover off the PC and blow a normal house fan on it. This will cool it off and if you still have problems you know you've eliminated heat as an issue. That's of course assuming the HSF didn't fall off so make sure you do a visual inspection of the hardware. I'd also first install motherboard monitor to check your temps as well as check in the bios. Personally it doesn't sound like heat.

Next check the memory. Since you didn't give a brand there's a good chance it's generic in which case anything goes. If you have more than one stick, take one out and see if you still have a problem. Then try the other stick. Try different slots as well. If you have only one stick you should borrow one from a friend to test.

I suppose it could also be your powersupply. It might be going out for all I know. Try stripping your system down (if you can) and see if that helps. You can also check your voltages in motherboard monitor.

I've had that happen, well I installed a wimpy HSF on a Duron 800, and it wouldn't install Windows. The PC had random errors and wouldn't work. That was the whole reason I came to THGC if I remember correctly.

Ya. It is not a heat problem trust me. I have a Gigantic HSF and its not even letting out warm air if i feel it.

Ok then so its not heat.
Two common culprits are bad ram and a bad/dying PSU.
Test the ram buy downloading and running MEMTEST86. (any errors = bad)
MOTHERBOARD MONITOR 5 is also recommended so you can obvserve the system voltages. Voltages that fluctuate alot or drop under load signify that the PSU is dying.

The thing is, sometimes components just die.

Well thanks for everyones help. I did end up getting it fixed. It was just a problem of having more than one stick of ram and both running at different speeds.

I don't know English

Reply to viper2211

if this is a stick that has been working in the pc, then its gone bad. also if they are different speeds your mobo will run at the slower speed. i'm thinking you've blown a transistor. if you were running your ram at 133 there is a good chance they will both work at 100.

I took out the slower RAM and everything is running PERFECT now. so theres no worries.

Reply to viper2211

ahhh. yes. that would do it :)
Slower ram undoubtedly rated for more lax timings/Mhz, so it was only a matter of when.
Thats why its recommended to stick with the same brand and type. (or at least the same speed grade)
