Hello

I am experiencing rather low fps on my RIG
Intel core 2 quad Q8300 2.5 GHZ
4gb ram Corsair DDR2
Radeon 6970 HD 2GB DDR5

The game is patched and with Dawnguard DLC and the fps is really bad/annoying i get 20-30 in some places like The town you start in where you are about to be executed
and forests 60 its just a fps rollercoaster no matter what settings i play the game on. I've set the setting to the lowest everything tunred off just kept hte resolution on my native 1920x1080 and still the low fps persists
Help would be very appreciated !

well your gpu is very good, much better than the rest of your rig. it could be getting bottlenecked especially cuz of how hard skyrim is on the cpu.

other thing I'd try is delete these files:
Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrim.ini
Documents/My Games/Skyrim/SkyrimPrefs.ini

And then re open launcher and let it set graphics, DONT change anything and see how it runs, if it runs ok then bump it up to ultra if not there already

did what you said still get 30 fps in helgen :////
what could it be the fps remains the same on lowest settings
setting it to highest only suffers like 5 fps
i play other games like borderlands 2 or crysis 2 60-40 fps on max

Hm try verifying game install with steam.

If that doesn't work then download HW Monitor and/or MSI Afterburner with on screen display and monitor GPU usage while you are playing skyrim. If it is below like 70% and still getting low fps then your CPU is too weak for your card (very good possibility that is the problem here).

I won't always trust the guys at the store, as they want your money. That said, in this case, they are most likely right. Skyrim is a known CPU limited game.

Could be ram? I have a Core2Quad Q8400 @ 3.2ghz OC 8gb ddr2 with GTS250 and Skyrim runs 60fps on medium setting at 1360 x 768 and never lags. OS is Win 7 64bit

Skyrim isn't nearly as bad as it used to be on the CPU. It's received an overhaul that greatly reduced CPU processes. It's still intensive, but not like it used to be. With that said, I play Skyrim at the same resolution on Ultra and I have yet to drop below 50fps with my 6850.
