Overclocking a Ge force 4 MX

I´ve just discovered tha my Geforce MX 440 is from the SE series, so it has the same clock speeds of a MX 420. So I got the coolbit registry tweaker and I wonder if there would be any problem if I do a little overclocking (250/333 to 270/400) or even more? Are the GPUs and Memories the same of a regular MX 440?

Probably slower RAM, but you can try overclocking it as far as possible. STart with the memory first, take it up a few MHz, test it (3DMark 20001 is good for testing), and if you don't see any problems, take it up a little more. When it finally give you problems (usually artifacts), take it down a notch. Then do the same with the video chip.

I had that overcloking experiance with my mx440 g4 card using Nvmax a cool utility i was able to rise the clock to 290 & ram to 333mhz

Cute. I got an Asylum (best buy sale) GeForce4 MX440se sitting at 350/550 right now. I can go a few higher, but it starts to get artifacts after a while. The stock was 270/400. This was with a passive cheap heatsink that came with it. Since then, I stuck a real fan on it (still cheap though) maybe I'll try to OC the GPU a little more.....

Welcome to the club, i bought the same mx440 thinking it was a tru 440. But sadly. I just overclocked mine, added a gpu fan. and surprisingly i can max out the speeds without any artifacts!! YAY! i dont know about your card though. But seriously get a fan it's quite hot there
BTW i run mine at 300/430
I can do 332 and 443 easily. Thats the limit

Thats all? Use coolbits, it allows you to go to 540/800. of course mine wont run that fast, but the option is there.

copy and paste the following into notepad, then rename it to det40x.reg or something. (only use if you have detonator 40 or higher). If you have winXP, just double click on it and it does it for you. Restart, and you should be able to overclock from Display Settings=>Properties=>Advanced=>Clockspeed

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak]
"Coolbits" = dword:FFFFFFFF
"NvCplEnableHardwarePage" = dword:00000001
"NvCplEnableAGPSettingsPage" = dword:00000001

Yes that allow a higher theoritical OC... but the chance it reaches it is low.

I did the same when I was OC'ing my old GeForce2 MX... can you imagine a GeForce2 MX running at 300MHz GPU? The max was 225MHz for me.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole :eek:

By reading this, it sounds to me that the limit for overclocking is set by the software controlling it, not the card itself. To me it seems it runs fine at 332/443, but he doesn't have the option of going higher. I was just giving him a way to. I know it won't go any faster than the card can handle.

Are you sure your's is a 440 se coz if it is then it's already overclocked. 440se runs at 420 speeds. i.e. 250/333. And I'm using Powerstrip and yea that's the top limit it shows. Thanks for the reg crack though. BUt i tried using the reg overclock. When i overclock it and then start powerstrip it shows stock speeds. Are you sure it's being overclocked?

And yea your ram is probably less than 5ns.

Then the package lies! But I won't complain. :p

I know it is being overclocked due to Performance Test (trial version) and 3DMark2001 SE. I get a pretty good increase when overclocking. Let me do a run with and without overclocking to see exactly the difference.

When windows is restarting, does the screen flicker once, like it was changin resolution? If so, it is overclocking.

Well, it isn't stable at stock speeds..... I guess it just like to be overclocked. When set to the previous overclock in this thread (as I have moved it up 2 startups ago) my 3dMark was 7017 (as seen by my sig, until I change it to the new one)

I increased the clock of the GPU from 350 to 375, and now my 3DMark score is 7079.

So with a 25MHz GPU change, I got 68 3DMark points.

When I was doing the 3DMark with the default speeds, I was noting that my FPS maxed out at 180 on the lobby test, where overclocked it hit 200 (sometimes 202), so that was 20 FPS there alone.

Well I stapped back from the registry hack long ago, I now use Rivatuner. Great app and it has no limit... atleast the software will never be the limiting factor. And it also has much more other tweaking functions.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole :eek:

Rivatuner works for XP/Detonator40+/GeForce4? Cool, I'll have to get it.
