I have only had this particular Steam account for two years. I do a lot of my gaming in offline mode and I have played Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 for years before I ever even bought them on this Steam account. Half Life 2 required Steam from the get go but Half Life 1 did not when it was released back in '99.
