Does anyone know what kind of output the 'rmp wire' (usually yellow) puts out for fan speed measurement? Just wondering how I could measure it besides using my computer's motherboard.

tnx for the input!

ummm.... its either a very low variable voltage or a pulsed voltage... think the first.

why dont you get a variable speed fan and put a voltmeter accross the tacho and ground lines?

It's a 4volt TTL pulse, 4 per revolution.

A Hardware tach may be nifty but the software ones are generally good enough.

Take a look at MBPROBE at http://mbprobe.livewiredev.com/

MBProbe puts an icon in your task bar with the CPU temperature showing, it also monitors voltages and fans and can shut your system down if things get too far wrong.

Interesting MBProbe looks like a lighter version of MBM 5 which you can download here: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

My dual-PSU PC is so powerfull that the neighbourhood dims when I turn it on

Interesting... Far as I know, MBMonitor and MBProbe are two independently developed programs.

tnx guys... ya my crappy mobo only supports 2 software tach's... I just wanted to to something wierd with the extra lines, because i'm putting a pot in the fan (to make it a variable speed fan) and there's that nice extra wire doing nothing. I wanted to tie a LED to it or something, lol... but I'm thinking that it is too much of an effort.

heh. i dont think that would be tooo hard... just finding the right led... or string leds upin a row...or better yet, a old fashioned needle showing fan speed :)
