CPU temp with ASUS A7V333

My processor reads at 81 C/180 F in the bios. I have heard rumors that because of the way the motherboard(ASUS A7V333)reads the temp or where it reads it from, not sure. I am asking if this is a bad temp or is it just the way it is read, and also if it is a bad temp, what should I use to cool it. I have in my Computer:

AMD 2100+ XP
Corsair 256mb DDR
ASUS A7V333 Motherboard with RAID,(not using it though)

I do a lot of CAD work with my computer and I just bought another 512MB of DDR ram. I am thinking that my CPU is used most intensly while I am running these programs, so if my CPU does need to be cooled, what should I do.

-Thanks

ahhh. gotta love high cpu temps... if they are high at all.

Certain mobo + cpu combo's read unusually high, wehn infact the cpu temp is waaaaaaaaaay lower.

the easiest thing to do is:
Gently Touch the heatsink ontop the cpu when the system is running at full load.
IF
A. the heatsink is cool to the touch, then it isnt touching the CPU properly and the cpu is overheating. reseating of the heatsink may be needed

B. the heatsink is warm to the touch, then everything is running normally, and the reported temp is just wrong.

C. the heatsink is too hot to comfortably touch for more than a second or two, then it is overheating, and you need better CPU cooling.

my bet is on B.

Do you use the BIOS or Asus PC-Probe to read the temp... the PC-Probe is known to display a wrong temp in certain versions.

My dual-PSU PC is so powerfull that the neighbourhood dims when I turn it on

My Asus A7V333 with a XP2100 also reads higher in the BIOS than with MBM or Asus Probe which read the same but lower than the BIOS.

I was recently told that on some boards the cpu is ramped up to about 50% when you are in the hardware monitor of the BIOS. I guess to get a more real-life reading. I have been trying to find out if this is true of the A7V333 and at what % the cpu is truely running. This would explain why my cpu temp is always about 8` higher than MBM or AP.

For it is not what is seen, but what is not seen.

That reading is dangerously close to the self-destruct point of your CPU!

Check your heatsink...
Be sure it's seated correctly.
Be sure the high side of the step in the base is over the cambox in the socket (were the lever is).
Make sure you removed the shipping cover from the thermal pad.

If you lift it up you are going to have to clean off the old thermal pad and put in thermal grease. Radio Shack carries a good low priced product or, if you can get it you can use Arctic Silver...

The instructions for applying thermal grease are here:
<A HREF="http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm" target="_new">http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm</A>

(Use the same procedure no matter what grease you use.)

If all is well in heat sink land and the temperature does not come down... then you may have to look into a much better cooler for the cpu... Something like this:
