How far could you take a AMD 2400 with the stock cooler?
What about a AMD 1700 Tbred-B?

How much better would a volcano 9 or volcano 7 be over the stock coolers?

I don't recommend the stock coolers if you are overclocking. They're barely adequate as it is.

Look into Spire:

and Thermaltake:

If you are overclocking, look into the aluminum sinks with copper inserts. And look for very low values of Thermal Resistence (under.5).

You can't overcool a CPU.

Not very far. Stock coolers are just that.
They are designed to cool ADEQUATELY with not too much moise at stock speeds and voltages with normal case cooling. Thats all.

A Volcano 7 or 9 would be somewhat better, and quieter, but there are heatsinks that are MUCH better than the volcano's around. Heatsinks designed for overclocking e.g.

Volcano 7+
AX-7
SK-800
Alpha pal 8045
swiftech mcx-462
etc

If you used a stock XP2400+ cooler on a XP1700+ you would probably get better results. The xp1700+ runs at a far lower thermal output so you could probably get a half decent OC out of it before it would have overheating problems

Alright I suppose I'll go with a T-bred B 1700 (can someone tell me where to find one) and use the extra money to get a SLK heatsink, then later on buy a Barton 3000 or so when they get cheap.

Yeah I live in US, didn't realize Newegg sold 2100 B cores.
I decided on the SLK-800 and a 80mm Smartfan 2 Case fan strapped on top of it. Combo is about 50$ (and it fits on a7n8x mobo)

A good combo there, though you may not like the lurid orange colour of the smartfan LOL.

The case really has a lot to do with it!
I've just totally given up on Mini and Mid tower cases... they require multiple fans and GOOD CPU cooling..
Since goin to full (4 big bay) cases, stock coolers and 1 case fan is keepin everything <45C fully workin... that's with like a Coolmaster(almost stock) and radio shack compound... and shine up the bottom of the alluminum HS with a little car rubbing compound befores installing and that knocks off about 2C!)

XP 1700+(B) @1992(12*166), 39 to 44C, cool... and like a Rock!
Best $50 cpu and $6 cooler I've ever had...

And I'll never go back to Mini/Mid cases...
