Download JetAudio basic from http://www.jetaudio.com

It can play all major audio/video file formats, has good interface. Moreover it can play Real Media. Many people don't like real player, but need to play real media files. For these people, this player is a very good real player alternative.

The only difference beween basic and full version is MP3 and MP3 Pro encoding. The free version doesn'r support MP3/MP3 Pro encoding

I've used it when I couldn't get a movie to play right in WMP.

Hmmm... I tried it but I don't really like it. I rather have Windows Media Player which has all screens build into one and are easier to control and the funny Foobar player with its easy lay-out.

That audio player doesn't seem to support 64 bit floating point decoding... or am I missing something?

Just wondering...what is wrong with WMP? What are your guys major complaints?

Wondering that, too. I use WMP for movie files, and musicmatch for mp3s.

damn, it doesnt play the files unless you have quicktime and real installed, it uses the same engine just doesnt open the program. i was hoping it would play them standalone. for 17 megs its not that impressive after all.

JetAudio has 64 bit FP decoding engine, not sure about CoolPlayer.

Why you will need 64 bit FP decoding engine, since it sounds good?

ok i have some reasons not to use it!!!!

list starts now

it uses a rather large amount of CPU resources.

the video media playing mode is not very good when using it on a tv screen(in fullscreen) while trying to surf the web on the computer screen.

the graphics are a bit much for my personal tastes.

personally i don't mind Mplayer (the old version of media player, its still included and has an icon of a small clapper board)

but i use my media players in Fullscreen mode, and Microsoft doesn't achive this well when the desktop is spaned over two monitors.

also it is near impossible to un-install once you have installed the task bar player, and other things.

ok hope that helps. if you like it thats fine!!!
but some people prefer other players (i hate people who don't give reasons for NOT using somthing, however hating microsoft is a fair reason not to use a product, its called passive resistance, and boycotting)

It uses a larger amount of memory but I haven't noticed using up a large amount of CPU resources. Maybe with the visuals on but I dont care about that stuff anyway.

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.

Reply to Pettytheft

oh yeah whoops the full screen problem i'll explain it better so you know what i'm talking about.

i always wanted to watch a video in fullscreen on my tv, while surfing the web.

well i could put Mplayer (the secondary microsoft player) on the tv and maximise it. yep that worked fine. well untill i clicked on another program like mozila or IE then it would return to normal size.

BUGGER thats why i stopped using Mplayer

now as for WMP the full new one (well 8 at least)

it would never maximize on the tv screen without blacking out the main monitor or somthing strange like that.

so basicly those are the only reasons.

but prior ot that then i used WMP

Yes... it really improved music quality for me. And I want a player that support 24 bit output when I buy a new soundcard.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole

Reply to svol

I really don't understand how can 24 bit can improve quality over 16 bit. There's hardly any practical quality difference beween 4 bit ADPCM and 16 bit RAW PCM.

Then you don't have my ears... and I know I guy who can even hear the difference between MP3 and original CD at high MP3 quality (atleast that is what he says  ).

16 bit integer is much to little nowadays for music... why do you think a Super Audio CD (SACD) uses 24 bit and 96KHz music?

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole

Reply to svol

I was talking about most cases, there's no audible difference between 16 bit PCM and 4 bit ADPCM.

Your guy must be a liar, 320kbps is sure theoritically lossy, but not audible when you encode it with LAME MP3 (q=5 to q=0) or Fraunhofer IIS encoder. Only using Xing, GoGo or LAME MP3 (q=7 to q=10) can make audible difference between 320kbps and original CD. IMO, there's no audible difference @ from 192k and over. You really never need more than 256k.

I think your guy will find difference between Monkey's Audio (a lossless codec) and original CD, unless you let him know about the format.

Oh, and SACD! It's a technical crap. It's always possible to make a standard higher than current audio CD specs, but these guys forget this fact that our ear is not upgradeable. We have same 2 ears like we hear Audio CD and when we hear SACD. If they can make some thehnology, that will make our ear 5 from 2, then I may consider SACD some kind of real technology. IMO, simulating 5 channels in 2 channel is a better idea. It will sound like real 5:1 when you will use headphones.

About 24bit and 96k Hz- they will make no difference in most of the cases. In most cases, current audio CDs' sound like hearing directly from the artist. I don't think SACD can make the audio better than original show.

You can always buy a server class mobo, Ultra 160 SCSI controller (64bt PCI), 2 x 15k rpm U160 SCSI HDD in RAID-0. But do you think that it's really needed for general PC usuage? SACD vs. Audio CD is the same thing.

Well you seem to forget that the ear can hear way more then 16 bit integer can put out... really I too can hear the difference between 16 and 24 bit.

Ofcourse. As you might know a sound signal is originally analoge but converted towards a digital signal with 16 or 24 bit decoding. A 16 bit signal has only 16 bits to describe the sound channel while a 24 bit has 24 bits. Therefore a 24 bits sound channel will be more presize then a 16 bit channel.

Same goes for 16 bit integer or 64 bit floating point decoding of MP3.

But there's always question, how much is enough?

If the difference is like 16 bit color vs. 24 bit color, then we should probably stick to 16 bit audio.

You can't see the difference between 16 and 24 bit colour?!?

Hey BTW, do you know some good places to download rare codecs?

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole

Reply to svol

In 90% cases, there's no practical difference between 16bit and 24 bit. In audio, this will be 95% to 98%. Our ear is not as good as our eyes for catching difference bewtween 16 and 24 bit.

Which codecs you want to download?
