Old HDD on new PS3 slim?

So my old ps3 got the yellow light of death (well some flashes and then the light) two years ago and i got the slim on that year's Christmas. I've only just recently bothered to try and fix it, I tried the "heating components" trick but that didn't work, so i thought it *could* (probably not but hey) just be a corrupted hard drive. What would happen if i put my old ps3 harddrive on the new one? If it works i would like to back up my data, but if it doesn't, would the ps3 reformat it?

  1. I think the PS3 would try to format it immediately sicne the firmware is out of date. A lot of the ps3 updates are mandatory if you want to continue to use the PSN.
