Internal Hardware Exam

These may be very easy for you guys but hardware stuff is unfamiliar to me. If anything goes wrong hardware wise, I simply call PooBaa and tell him to get his ass over here and fix it!
I'm more a software gal!

Here's my revision questions:

What are the major components of a motherboard?

Q:What are the major components of a motherboard?
A: cpu socket, ram slots, agp, usb ports, pci, power, ide north and south bridges, bios, com1 and 2 parralel, flopy connector. optionl extras cnr, ide raid, SATA, SCSI, firewire, VGA.

Q:What is Primary Storage?
A: Hard disk drive (hdd)

Q:What is Secondary Storage?
A: floppy, cd's, dvd's, zip, cdrw, dvd ± rw

Q:What are the phases of disk prep?
check jumpers, connect power and ide cables, partition, format.

Q:Why partition a disk?
partitining is used to devide the drive in to logical blocks so you could have, for exampl, one 80GB drive and make a 20GB partition for the os and 60GB partition for all your documents. this can also give an advantage in that if the os dies than you documents are less likely to have gone with the os.

Q:How do you partition a disk?
a:you can use fdisk form a botable floppy, use the partition magic, use the setup program when booting the xp cd, use computer managemnt from xp its self, use druid for linux?? etc. there are countless ways to do this.

Q:What are the possible configurations for a Hard Drive?
arimary, slave (i think thats waht they are asking)

Qescribe the NTFS file system.

Q:What is a head?
A: this is the part of the HDD that reads the actual disks

Qescribe the following expansion slots: ISA, PCI, AGP
A: isa 16 bit 16mhz(?) pci 32 bit 33mhz agp 32 bit(?) 66 mhz also agp is direcly attatched to northbridge for direct cpu and memory access where as isa and pci are on south bridge

Q:What is disk caching?
a: this is where the hdd makes an logical decision on what you are going to access next and reads it in to a small bit of very high speed memory so that it does not take so long to load it when it is needed.

Q:What is SCSI, defrag and disk compression?
SCSI - small computer systems interface - a parrelel interface foir conecting HDD's and cd's used mainly in entreprise servers and very high end computers used to be used for thinks like scanners as well
defrag. over time the hard drive files become fragmented, that is one file on the drive is not stored all in one place but spread through out the hdd. this happens due to other files being delaeated and thus the spall holes are filed in with new files but if the new file is too big to fill the hole proporly the file is cut and the rest is stord in other gaps on the hdd. drfraging is the process of reorgnising these fils so they are logicly distributed through the disk. also it puts the most accerssd files near to the start of the disk where it will be found fastest.
disk compresion this is the process of applying compresion to all the files on a hard disk to try and obtain more sapce., tjhis is not commenly used any more as drives are much larger and sapce is less of an issue. can cause probles if drive becomes corrupted it is harder to correct errors in compresed data
QCB, Chipset.
A pcb - printed circuit board - this is the waht the motherboard is. the pcb is what all the componets attatch to on the board its self. e.g the cpu socket is solderd on to the pcb. the board has been treated before all the components are put on it to etch wires and connections, out of copper, in to the board its self (wont go in to too much detail on this as i dont think its very important)
chipset. this is made up of a north and sout bridge. the north bridges function is to deal with memory inputs and outputs, cpu control and agp control to ensure they talk in the correct timings (?) and also it comunicates to the south brige.
south bridge controls pci, isa, usb, ide, basicly everything the north bridge does not do. it than can rely this data to the north bridge where it can be delt with as needed.
(some new development are that gigabit lan chips an reside on the north brige as well so as to ensure super fast conections for servers etc)

I will answer one question you're still missing... I can't explain much about NTFS (which is more software actually):
PCB - Printed Circuit Boards... those silicon boards where all components are soldered on.
Chipset: the combination of northbridge and southbridge which determine what kind of memory you can run and control the AGP port + which CPU you can use (northbridge)... southbridge: which I/O things (FD, IDE, SATA COM-ports, LPT-ports USB ports, Firewire, PCI ports) you can use, sometimes build in sound and LAN.
