Of course the lieberal demoncrat media leaves out the most important part
which is that morale is low because of the lack of support for the war at
home. Soldiers come home after fighting for our, and Iraqis, freedom to be
spit on by demoncrats that supported the war at the beginning. 75% supported
the war when it began now only 40% do because of typical Kerry like
flip-flopping. The 35% that have jumped ship are destroying the spirit of
the brave American gladiators.

U.S. Soldiers in Iraq Report Low Morale By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer
1 hour, 5 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A majority of U.S. soldiers in Iraq say morale is low,
according to an Army report that finds psychological stress is weighing
particularly heavily on National Guard and Reserve troops.

Still, soldiers' mental health has improved from the early months of the
insurgency, and suicides have declined sharply, the report said. Also,
substantially fewer soldiers had to be evacuated from Iraq for mental health
problems last year.

The Army sent a team of mental health specialists to Iraq and Kuwait late
last summer to assess conditions and measure progress in implementing
programs designed to fix mental health problems discovered during a similar
survey of troops a year earlier. Its report, dated Jan. 30, 2005, was
released Wednesday.

The initial inquiry was triggered in part by an unusual surge in suicides
among soldiers in Iraq in July 2003. Wednesday's report said the number of
suicides in Iraq and Kuwait declined from 24 in 2003 to nine last year.

A suicide prevention program was begun for soldiers in Iraq at the
recommendation of the 2003 assessment team.

The overall assessment said 13 percent of soldiers in the most recent study
screened positive for a mental health problem, compared with 18 percent a
year earlier. Symptoms of acute or post-traumatic stress remained the top
mental health problem, affecting at least 10 percent of all soldiers checked
in the latest survey.

In the anonymous survey, 17 percent of soldiers said they had experienced
moderate or severe stress or problems with alcohol, emotions or their
families. That compares with 23 percent a year earlier.

The report said reasons for the improvement in mental health are not clear.
Among possible explanations: less frequent and less intense combat, more
comforts like air conditioning, wider access to mental health services and
improved training in handling the stresses associated with deployments and
combat.

National Guard and Reserve soldiers who serve in transportation and support
units suffered more than others from depression, anxiety and other
indications of acute psychological stress, the report said. These soldiers
have often been targets of the insurgents' lethal ambushes and roadside
bombs, although the report said they had significantly fewer actual combat
experiences than soldiers assigned to combat units.

The report recommended that the Army reconsider whether National Guard and
Reserve support troops are getting adequate training in combat skills. Even
though they do less fighting than combat troops, they might be better suited
to cope with wartime stress if they had more confidence in their combat
skills, it said.

Only 55 percent of National Guard support soldiers said they have "real
confidence" in their unit's ability to perform its mission, compared with 63
percent of active-duty Army support soldiers. And only 28 percent of the
Guard troops rated their level of training as high, compared with 50 percent
of their active-duty counterparts.

Small focus groups were held to ascertain troop morale.

The report said 54 percent of soldiers rated their units' morale as low or
very low. The comparable figure in a year-earlier Army survey was 72
percent. Although respondents said "combat stressors" like mortar attacks
were higher in the most recent survey, "noncombat stressors" like uncertain
tour lengths were much lower, the report said.

The thing that bothered soldiers the most, the latest assessment said, was
the length of their required stay in Iraq. At the start of the war, most
were deployed for six months, but now they go for 12 months.

Asked about this, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told a Pentagon
news conference that the Army's 12-month requirement is linked in part to
its effort to complete a fundamental reorganization of fighting units.

"I've tried to get the Army to look at the length of tours and I think at
some point down the road they will," he said.

Yes, it's geared towards the poor southern republican trash and democrats
trying to escape poverty and get a college education. The poor ignorant
southern trash is far more numerous.

LMAO. Even YOU don't buy that load of horseshit. Ever been to inner
city welfare mecca anywhere? There are more "democrats trying to
escape poverty" in the city of Chicago than there are "ingorant
southern trash" in the entire South. It's not even close. Then tack on
NY, L.A. and every other metro area in the country that are the ONLY
reason the democratic party still exists...

Oh, and just a generation or so ago, the South was solidly Democratic.
You weren't calling them "poor ignorant southern trash", back then.
The party turned its back on the South, not the other way around.

They do? That would conflict with all the minorities and children of lesser
gods. The militray is packed with kids from poor ends of town. Why would
their parents be republicans? The administration is fond of telling us the
soldiers are all republicans, but nothing documented has been shown. Perhaps
you have the offiical stats on this perplexing situation.

You see, electoral demographics show poor and depressed sides of towns vote
democtraic. Since the militray has loads of poorkids, who cant afford
college, that would be directly opposed to your statement.

Republican demographics show large numbers of their children go to college
right after HS, and don't go to the service.

Do you know about the recent gathering of young republicans? If not, check
it out, it's available at a search engine near you.

Or you could have just looked it up:

http://www.linkmeister.com/blog/archives/000644.html

....the consensus view seems to be that the military as a whole votes
Republican by a margin of slightly less than 2-to-1, with enlisted men
and women Republican by 3-to-2, and Republicans outnumbering Democrats
among officers by 8-to-1.
--

And that is from an article that claims Republicans are LOSING
military votes.

Why, exactly, did you think Al Gore tried to have all those overseas
military votes in Florida discounted in 2000? Because counting them
guaranteed he'd lose.

I love the "Republicans are rich" theory. Newsflash....they wouldn't
win a single election if they were the "rich" party. Less than 15% of
this country can be considered "rich". The poor FAR FAR FAR outnumber
the rich, so why do the Dems EVER lose an election? Simple, because
Republican is the party of the MIDDLE CLASS and WORKING CLASS of this
country. You know, the SAME classes that join the armed forces...

“White middle income voters (who constitute three-quarters of the
middle class and one-third of the entire electorate), delivered
landslide margins to Republicans. The economic tipping point—the
income level at which whites were more likely to vote Republican than
Democrat—was $23,700, not far above the poverty level....

I would say $23,700 is definately "working class", wouldn't you?

So, yeah, the working class IS voting Republicans to represent them.

More ignorance of history. Why am I not surprised?

You DO know John F. Kennedy ONLY won his election because of all the
dead people in Cook Co. Illinois who "voted" for him, right? You DO
know that was accompolished because the most masterful election thief
in history, Richard Daley, was King...er...I mean...Mayor of Chicago,
right?

These things are absolutely indisputable. Kennedy won Illinois by less
than 9k votes, yet entire cemetaries of people voted for him. In one
instance there were some 60 "registered" voters who gave the same
address....which happened to an abandoned warehouse. There was so much
voter fraud in and around Chicago even the news reporters were having
a fit. The Judge who flatly refused to hear the Republicans case was a
good friend of Mayor Daley and was subsequently appointed to a federal
judgeship by "President" Kennedy.

Do you happen to recall who Al Gores campaign manager was? Yep,
Richard Daleys SON William (and the brother of Chicagos current Mayor,
Richard Daley, Jr.
)
You'll recall that among Daleys known tactics in Florida were: Trading
cigarettes for votes, demanding hand recounts ONLY in 4 heavily
Democrat precincts, keeping overseas military votes from being
counted, and the last, which would be hilarious if people weren't
stupid enough to buy it, claiming the "butterfly ballot" was too
complicated and "confusing". The reason it would be hilarious is that
ballot was DESIGNED BY THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY and because IT WAS A CLONE
OF THE BALLOT USED IN DALEYS ILLINOIS FOR MANY ELECTION CYCLES.

I always chuckle when people claim Bush "stole" that election out from
under the foremost election thiefs in the land. The next time you feel
the need to make that ridiculous claim, you'd do well to research the
history of the Daley election theft machine that has existed for more
than half a century and still churns to this day. Daleys failed
ATTEMPT to steal that election does NOT equate to Bush actually
stealing it. It may have gotten William snubbed by his own family,
though...

But those folks aren't voting in their own economic interest. They're
voting based on white flight, so-called moral issues, likeability and
"patriotic" issues.

Since when is economic interest the ONLY reason to vote for a
candidate? The Democratic party isn't fighting for the economic
interests of blue and white collar workers, either with the exception
of ranting on about minimum wage, which doesn't affect most of them,
anyhow.

Here's the problem. The Republicans talk the social issues and walk
the economic issues. They draw the antiabortion votes, but they
deliver the estate tax abolition. They talk about Gawd, they worship
the rich. They talk about flag burning, they deliver for Halliburton.

I appreciate what your comments are doing for the Republican side. Please
consider publishing them, or perhaps launching a lecture tour.

There's a difference between having your voting base comprised of
working-class people and actually _representing_ working-class people.

Not that it matters. Not a single soldier in Iraq or elsewhere was

Nobody ever said wealthy kids are joining, they aren't. Neither are
poor kids.

It's the OTHER 3/4ths of the country whose kids are joining.

You guys make a big deal out of rich kids not joining...so what? There
AREN'T all that many of them in the first place. There are FAR FAR
more POOR kids, and THEY ain't joining, either.
