I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in overclocking pentium 3's

I am running a 550 (100) Katami (spelling?) core slot 1 CPU with 512 Half- speed external cache on an asus p3b-f mobo.

the cpu has no trouble up to 115 fsb (633) and runs rock solid with no voltage increase but at 120 it won't even post.

the pci speed souldn't be a prob cos it still happens at 124/31
i thought maybe the cache it reaching its max speed (315) but it is meant to be able to handle 350
my only other though is the power supply could be at fault cos it is only a 250W 'hippro'

any suggestions?

well, you should try uppin the VCore - the PSU should be ohk, its only a ~550Mhz CPU

Intel only released the Katmai core CPU up to 600MHz for a reason: Even the best Katmai PIII's had trouble going over that speed. Overclockers get them to around 650MHz sometimes. High overclocks simply aren't for this CPU.

I'm running the same board. With BIOS 1008 Beta you can run any PIII or Celeron CPU you like! Right now I'm running a Tualatin Celeron 1.1GHz CPU at 1540MHz/140MHz bus, on the Upgradeware Slot-T (tualatin compatable) adapter.

This seems to be the best bang for your buck. The Celeron 1.1GHz Tualatin cost around $40, and the Slot-T adapter cost $20.

While a Celeron 1400 would work, you'll get more performance from an overclocked 1100. Why? Bus speed is the largest handicap for the Tualatin Celeron. My Celeron 1200@1480 couldn't compete with my Celeron 1100@1466, due to the bus speed. 1200's are not likely to overclock to 133MHz bus (1600MHz). 1300's and 1400's are even less likely to get a decent bus speed.

You need PC133 of course to get good overclocks.

So my suggestion is to get a Tualatin Celeron 1100 and a Slot-T adapter.

Yeah ive got PC133 RAM, upping the Vcore didn't work up to 2.3v (2.0v processor) so i didn't take it any further.

Not real keen on celerons in general the college celeron 1ghz seem generally unstable and slow and the old P3 550E's(0.18 micron) calculated Pi to 10 million decimal places in 270 seconds while the celerons got 440, and mine gets 320 @ 550, so it almost seems like a step backwards
