wow how did you get 178 fsb out of it?
did you unlock the chip?
and you say that is air cooled and no case fans?
lol wow, very nice.
i have an 1800+ that i cant keep stable at or above 140 fsb.
i assume it is the crappy memory i am running pc2100 and mixed mods, a 512 and 2 128's.
other than getting better memory can you offer me some tips on settings?
i have a shuttle ak31a via 266a chipset,
athlon xp 1800+
antec 550 wat psu
g3, sblive,maxtor.
running the latest via hyperion drivers and the latest dets.
in the bios i have the memory set to cas 2 and aggressive settings otherwise.
and my cpu voltage is at 1.825.
should i adjust my memory voltage for stabilty?

the last system i was a master of overclocking was my kt7a raid 133a via , 1200 athlon setup, that thing i had tons of fun with and new every setting and how to use them, now im a bit lost.
i was thinking of dropping the 256 module and leaving the two matching 128's or visa versa and dropping there settings to default, then looking into voltage sttings for memory cause im not sure about it at all.

and then trying to get the 140fsb or higher to take.
it has benched at 140 a few times but it doesnt like it for long. my usb hates it.
i havent unlocked the chip yet as i havent been able to see any gains in the low end of the spectrum yet and didnt want to chance screwing it up for nothing.
i would like to run it @ 150fsb at least to bench with.
can you help me at all?

The 1700+ TBred B is a gem of an overclocker. The record overclock of it is like 4.1 Ghz at overclockers.com. Scary, seeing that it started at 1.47 Ghz. You should be able to hit 200 (or better) FSB with that setup by bumping up the voltage a little. Still 2.23 Ghz at 1.6v is really nice...

so right now i am running it at 1.750 + .075 for 1.825, it reads in sandra as 1.824 i think.
and all other voltages are default.

my chip is still locked and my memory is fair in settings, but poor in overclocking.
also i have 3 modules, 2 128's and a 512, im thinking of experimenting with different combinations starting with just one 128 stick to see if the fsb will run stable over 140 mhz.
on a 266a chipset shuttle board, are you saying i should up my voltage a little more to try 140+ fsb's?
or should i up my memory voltage?
when i run it at 140 now with agrresive memory timings, sometimes i finish the 3dmark2k1 benchmark and sometimes it crashes to desktop in the second matrix style test with high detail usualy right at the end.
i have an antec true power 550 watt power supply, so i dont think it is the problem.

in the older systems, the tbirds with a 100 fsb x2 ddr, and 133a chipsets, i was very familiar with everything, but the ddr settings are a ittle new to me still, and i havent had much luck with overclocking it to this point.
although i was hasty when i built it out of desperation, i needed it right then , lol it was sunday most places were closed, didnt want to wait even for an internet order, lol so my kr7 system became a ak31 sytem and mushkin never got ordered instead i bought some samsung or pny crap at a local store pc2100. so i know not to expect much from it.

Is you 1800+ a TBred? I have a Palamino XP 2100+, and it sucks for overclocking. I am on a 266A (KR7A-133R) chipset too with Mushkin RAM and plenty of power, and I can't get mine over 152 Mhz FSB. I figure that if I were to get a CPU that doesn't suck, I could do better. Unfortunately, the 2100 was the last of the Palaminos, so it runs hot anyway. I would guess that if you pulled out some RAM and started with just one stick, you could do better. Populating all of the DIMMs on the 266A often causes problems, as does having mismatched sets.

Yeah, if you want to OC get rid of that Palomino. I had a 1700+ Palomino that wouldn't go over 145 on my A7N8X. I plopped down $60 for a 1700+ TBred B JIUHB stepping and I'm OC'd to 2.16 GHz (166*13) with no problem. I can even push it to 2.3 (166*14) totally stable, but I don't like to since my HSF kinda sucks and it tends to run hot at that speed. Other people are buying the 2100+ Tbred B since you don't have to mod it to get the higher multipliers. If you want to spend a little more money, you can get a 2500 Barton which can do 2.2 to 2.3 WITH the extra cache. Dump the palomino!

well, here it is, i ran the dam thing 30 different ways till late last night, recorded all results.
bottom line, with my memory, 1 512 pc2100 and 2 128mb pc2100 i can run 140 fsb x 11 for a 2000+ but it crashes in 3dmark2k1 every other time.
i tried every combination of memory, 1 stick in dimm1, 2, 3, 4 two sticks in various dimms, the one larger stick in 1,2,3,4 etc...
with settings turned to cas 2.5 and less than aggressive settings otherwise.
also the other way with settings turned up cas 2, etc..
at 135 i can use all 3 sticks of memory at cas 2, at 140 i can run all 3 sticks at cas 2.5 with limited results, i can run and am running it at 135 cas 2 4t/1t/ and it seems stable.
i think the pal would give me more with better memory but not much after reading about the "A" pal and 2 stepping.
im thinking ill grab a 1700+, then before i run it ill unlock this pal, pick up some pc2700.
then ill try the same with the 1700.
without a backup i am gonna wait though.
thanx for your help, you saved me alot of time, although i managed to spend 5 hours on it anyway.lol

ok last question.
what is the best way for me to determine the stepping and class before i buy one?
i remember when it was the old dresdin vs austin texas plant for chip production as one used copper innerconnectors and one didnt, it was a big deal at the time, but i forget what the deal was in identifying them.

are there markings on the chip i should look at for a coded production dates and such?
they made different class paliminos? i mean different stepping within its own line?
im running this on a 266a via board by shuttle, so i doubt that 166 fsb will be attainable even with the best memory and a 1700+, am i right in assuming that?

i wold assume my limitation will be the boards chipset at that point, but i would like to run 150 fsb with out crashing.
my good friend opwns a pc store here in ct, lol so ill see what i can grab a 1700+ for today.

More info from the 1700+ chip
AXDA1700DLT3C
9391067271066
JIUHB 0310XPMW
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Retail CPU

The "L" in the first line means its 1.5v (newer model 8)
The older model 6 1700's had an "M" in the first line for 1.75v. This is how you can tell the difference. FYI

Have you tried 180FSB? My XP1800 same stepping overclocks fine until I get to 180FSB, then the system wont power up at all until I reset the bios. I've tried lower multiplier etc higher voltage but the A7N8X-D rev1 (latest bios 1003) only goes up to 1.75v.

Wondering if the chips maxed out - bummer.

Currently:
XP1800@2125Mhz (12.5*170@1.55v)
Corsair XMS3000 2x256Mb

no i cant get my 1800 any higher than 140 and that has limited results.
i noticed in cpuid, that i have 2 sticks of 128 mb pc2300.
and one stick of 512 mbs pc2100.
the pc2300 is rated for cas 2 up to 140 and 2.5 to 143.
but no matter what combination of memory modules or different dimm sockets i run i get the exact same results.

i was thinking i have a 1200 thunderterd in another system, i am going to check its stepping with cpuid in a min, but i wonder if i could run that any faster than the 1800+ in this setup, it is in an sdr system now on a kt7a raid board.. ya think they overclocked any better?
i doubt it , i think it was default 100 ddr 200 fsb thinking back.
i think memory is the only way this one is gonna run any faster than 140fsb.

Yeah... sounds like the ram just cant cut it.

In my experience you need 6 things for wonderful overclocking:

1. A Good CPU
2. A Great Cooler
3. A Quality PSU
4. A solid Motherboard
5. High quality ram
and
6. Some Luck.

I can run 180 FSB but I decided to bring it back a litte for cooler and much more stable. I got it up to 200FSB once but didnt try more than once casue it was scary. I might try once more now and post results if sucessful. I do remember getting Sandra and PCMark scores higher than posted but I didnt write them down so I'll try again (now that I'm more comfortable with it)

Okay, anything over 194Mhz is "ify" for my cpu. Since the NForce2 runs best with in synch (memory and cpu running same freq.)except for some programs, (see Toms Nforce articles), I got my best overall results with Sandra with the following:

Asus AN78X rev 2.0 Deluxe, Athlon XP 1700+ T'bred (B)
190MHz@12.0 (unlocks in bios)
Memory 190MHz @ 5-2-2-3 Corsair(2X256) CMX356A-3200C2
CPU voltage: 1.675
SANDRA:
CPU: 8731 MIPS
CPU MultiMedia: 12860
Mem Bandwidth: 2964

I have reverted to slower speeds now 166@12.5
Once I overclocked my memory to 220+ MHz and had to reset
the bios jumper on the mobo in order to get going again.
One thing that I notice is that it is hard to get into the bios setup sometimes(its quick)
If anyone else has that problem push the "del" key just as it says "detecting IDE", and you will get in everytime.

These numbers handily beat 3000+ and P4-B 3.06
I've had my memory benchmarks pass the 3000 mark before but not this time, because I was concentrating mostly on the CPU right now. I kept memory settings conservative
until I got to a reliably bootable cpu speed, then pumped up the mem settings some. My memory isn't holding me back; its either the mobo or the cpu. Once the voice bios thingy said something like, "failed due to processor overclocking" I can't use the 12.5 bios multiplier in FSB speeds over 186Mhz, then I have to drop to 12.0 multiplier.
The highest actual CPU speed I could boot to was a little more than 2.3GHz. I check temps really quick when I booted and AsusProbe gave 51C(with no cpu load, stock heatsink/fan)

cpu vcore 1.675 and temps ~44C workin
Runs every day, solid at 12*166(1992) - set aggressive, with just a little bump on vcore

Will run 180+fsb with mutiplier at 11 and can push Sandra Mem mark well above 3000... like 3080+ - Whew!!! - but get occasional can't read memory errors if set aggressive - gotta either back off fsb a bit or let memory run cas3 for full stability (that ain't bad for kingston memory thats not supposed to OC very well)

1992(12*166) is super smmooth all around - Best $50 cpu i've ever had!

I'm using 1003, but by it self it won't let you see the higher multipliers. To see them, you need to mod your chip. If you cut the 5th L3 bridge, that will unlock all the mults above 12.5. XP 2100 comes with that bridge cut and that's why you have access to all mults with that chip. There have been plenty of posts on exactly what to cut and how to do it... that is if you don't mind voiding your warranty! When I did it, it worked like a champ and I can see mults all the way up to 18 (I think). Check out these posts for more info:
