i need a quiet heatsink for my athlon xp 1600+. i currently have a generic one. i dont even know the brand. its really loud and my cpu temp is about 55-57C.
im thinking about the coolermaster cp5-7jd1b-0l, glacialtech IGLOO 2500, and glacialtech IGLOO SILENT BREEZE 462. i was originally going to buy the coolermaster from looking at the cooler review on tomshardware, but i looked on newegg and found the igloo's. the reviews on digit-life seem to show that the igloos are ok. the results are so varied from tomshardware though, so i dont know if i should trust them. if they're accurate, the igloo silent breeze should be the quietest one with an ok performance.
has anyone bought any of those before? any recommendations?
any other heatsinks that are quieter with an ok performance?

What I've been doing is taking a fairly quiet 80mm fan and slapping on a 60mm adapter for my cpu fan. It performs virtually the same and dramatically reduces noise

Actually I'm a little disappointed that Panasonic (Panaflo) doesn't make a 70mm fan. Their other fans are almost inaudible...

The adaptors are a good idea, but they do restrict airflow somewhat.

I have the Igloo 2500. Like the performance and low-moderate noise. Hate the clip. I found it much too difficult to attach due to extremely high tension (too much in my opinion).

I modified the clip by grinding a very small amount of material off the fulcrum. It's still very tight but no longer ridiculous.

Not if you screw a fan grill to the heatsink, and then the fan to the grill... done that a few times and it works like a charm. The 92mm fan I got on my Swiftech MCXC-370 is nice and silent and gave me some decent temps.

This is a great mod for quietness...Take off the fane from your heatsink. Install a blower on the side of the heatsink to blow axially along the fins. You get much better flow this way. I run a comair/rotron blower at 7VDC@3000 RPM with very little noise. The heat sink is a Volcano 7+ and my temps dropped from 48 to 37.

The 80mm fans I buy are from crazypc.com and are called "generic case fans" and are 1.50 each and move 26.2 cfm at 22.5 db:

I was going to buy some 80mm Panaflo fans, but they're 9.99 and move 24 cfm at 28 db. Unless it's a typo, my "generic" fans are better than these. Either way, these 1.50 fans are cheap as crap, move a fair amount of air, and are almost toally silent

i was wondering if anyone has bought the other 2 heatsinks/fans that i listed on my first post, the coolmaster, and the silent something?
the coolmaster is $24 while the igloo 2500 is $15, and the silent thing is $17. im thinking of buying the silent thing since its quieter than the 2500, but im not sure if its quieter than the coolmaster. its cheaper though.

Buy a big heatsink that can carry a 80mm fan without needing an adaptor.

Furnish with the 80mm fan of your choice.

The spire falconrock2 seems to be a very nice and cheap cooler that fits the bill, if you can find one locally.

The Igloo 2500 isn't silent but it's quieter than each of my average case fans (don't know the dBA's but they are 32 CFM) and it's good enough to overclock my XP1700+ (Tbred B) to 2100 Mhz (~XP2600+).

Not sure how good the Silent Breeze is for overclocking.

I'll get killed on the boards for this, but I've put the Speeze 5F263B1M3 Whisperrock II on the last 4 systems I've built, all with XP 1700+. They're all consistently running about 5 degrees cooler than my 1800+ with a Thermaltake 7 and they're quieter, too. It is $7 (plus $5 for shipping) at Newegg. It's all aluminum, but its been quiet and does the job very well. I'll be using them until they don't make 'em anymore.
