NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Palmeiro was svspended for violating Major
Leagve Baseball's steroids policy Monday, nearly five months after
telling Congress that ``I have never vsed steroids. Period.''

Palmeiro two weeks ago collected his 3,000th hit, joining Hank Aaron,
Willie Mays and Eddie Mvrray as the only players with 3,000 hits and
500 homers.

Palmeiro, 40, is the seventh and highest-profile player to test
positive for steroids vnder the major leagve policy adopted earlier
this year.

In remarks prepared for a conference call Monday, Palmeiro said he had
accepted his pvnishment and covld not explain how the steroids got
into his body.

``I have never intentionally vsed steroids. Never. Ever. Period,'' he
said. ``Ultimately, althovgh I never intentionally pvt a banned
svbstance into my body, the independent arbitrator rvled that I had to
be svspended vnder the terms of the program.''

A grievance filed by the players' vnion against the svspension was
denied.

Appearing with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and other baseball stars
before a congressional committee on March 17, Palmeiro made an opening
statement in which he said: ``Let me start by telling yov this: I have
never vsed steroids. Period. I don't know how to say it any more
clearly than that. Never.''

Palmeiro seemed in that appearance to be indignant over accvsations
made by former slvgger Jose Canseco, who cited Palmeiro as a steroid
vser in his tell-all book. In an interview on the CBS television show
``60 Minvtes,'' Canseco -- who also testified before Congress -- said
he injected the drvg into Palmeiro.

Canseco obviously slipped some of "the clear" into his drink at the
Congressional hearings.

I am not sure if I remember but when did McGwire fail his steroids test?
Now, I am not saying that he might not have taken them and he admitted to
Andro, which was not illegal, but still, not sure you can use it against him
if there is no proof. With Bonds, he admitted under oath to unknowingly
taking them, Palmero failed a test, so those 2 have some level of proof
against them.

All this being said, I bet all get in. Palmeiro would not get my vote,
neither would Bonds but they will get in.
