I am new to video editing but from what I read in the MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 article, I think that I should be using a tool to copy the data on the DVD to a .VOB extension before using FLASKMPEG. Can someone suggest a good piece of software for copying the DVD to my hard disk.

You need a "ripper". A ripper allows you to copy a DVD to your HD. Go to <A HREF="http://www.doom9.net" target="_new">http://www.doom9.net</A> for more info.
