Hi All,
I'm using CheckPoint Secure Client to connect to my organisations lan. All
performs reasonably Ok, apart from browsing folders and files in network
shares, which is quite slow. Also saving files is slow - I mean literally
5-6 seconds to save a 5k text file.
My server admin guy tells my its because I'm on a 512kbps link at home and I
cant expect the same speed I get at work (100mbit network) I accept this
statement, but browsing my organisations Intranet is slower than browsing a
website.
Maybe this speed is to be expected when the traffic is being encrypted -
Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this? Am I expecting too much
from VPN?
Citrix thin client by the way, works well - Speed is very acceptable, surely
this must be shifting more data than saving a 5k file?
Perhaps someone could give me some pointers on how to start diagnosing where
the bottle neck is?
Useful info...
- XP Pro SP 1
- CheckPoint Secure Client R56
Thanks for reading!!
Simon.

What kind of VPN gateway are you using? Is it suited to ahndle the encryption?
Which encryption are you using? Does the VPN gateway use hardware-encryption?

Is there some reason to NOT believe your System Admin guy, some reason to
think he doesn't know what he is talking about?
If you don't have access to the server/firewall, there is very little
effective trouble shooting that you can do.
Further, you provide very little information to work with. What version of
Checkpoint? What version of SecureClient? How many remote users are running,
on average, at the same time or accessing the same records or data that you
are accessing? Is the secure server (firewall) dedicated or is it also used
to provide firewall services for the system, Mail, etc.
Finally, are other remote user suffering the same slow download speeds? Many
companies still think of remote access as an after thought, and are slow to
add resources to something still thought of as a "perk" or privilege, not
really necessary for business or the bottom line.
