Hi, I was wondring if anyone could give me a link to a guide to help me figure out how to overclock my CPU. Or maybe you have some wisdom of your own that you'd like to share? Some help would be great.

keep voltages under:
CPU: 1.8V
Mem: 2.8V

Increase FSB by 5Mhz increments, keeping multi low. When your comp crashes/windows freeze/burn in freeze/no POST, go back to the last increment, and go up by 1Mhz, until you reach stability. Add voltages to unstable systems without going over the safe V limit mentioned above. Then play with your multipliers.

Personally, I would test the memory FIRST, and then the CPU. MEMTEST86 is the best memory testing program available.

Just cause your memory can support high FSB, doesn't mean it'll run stabily with that speed under windows. Download Sisoft Sandra 2003, and do the Burn in tests. If you're really paranoid, then run prime95 for 24+ hours. Personally, I would play lots of games to make sure it's stable as well.

It would also help if you listed your other components.

Thanks.
I'm actually buying all new components for a system and am building it myself. It's basically the same system as umheint's.
AIW Radeon 9700 Pro
Corsair 2x512MB DIMM PC3200
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)
ASUS A7N-8X Deluxe MoBo

I'm still new at overclocking and I don't have a lot of experience but hopefully I'll figure this out. Thanks.

As long as it's a new A7N8X it will be a breeze. I just got an A78NX, 2500+ and new RAM/vid last week and the second I turned it on I went into BIOS and adjusted FSB speed to 200 and left multiplier at 11 and system booted right up as 3200+

To keep stable though at stock voltage I had to lower multiplier to 10.5 making it equivilant to an 3000+, but it runs easily at 2.2GHz with VCORE of 1.725 and DDR 2.7V. I even use the quiet and efficient stock cooler and temps range from 39-42C.

A78NX 2.0
2500+ @ 3200+
2/256 OCZ performance series @ 200MHz
ATI 9500PRO BIOS cracked to 9700PRO
Win XP SP1, DX 9.0a, Catalyst 3.4

Chrono_Trigger:

Chillax dude. I told you I'd walk you through the whole thing when you build your system.

Working with computers is like school. The theory is great, but it's useless compared to old-fashioned hands-on experience.

overclocking the 2500 is easy. ive never overclocked before, never even heard the term till couple months ago(refered towards a cpu anyways). and i just got my new system together with the 2500 and overclocked it to 2200mhz (3000+) in just a few minutes

My computer is so powerful, it can complete a simple math equation in only 3 and half days!

Damn you nja, damn you all... my Barton refuses and FSB higher than 185 even with a mult of 10 and voltage at 1.850 =(

hate to say it, but it's most likely due to the mobo not being the newer version 2.0 which was designed for 400 FSB, maybe try the newer BIOS which might add better capabilities. Also it could be due to the memory not being PC3200 rated, most PC3000 chips are overclocked PC2700's, even some of the first PC3200's were actually OC'ed PC2700 DIMMS which led to poor FSB clock scores when first emerging into the market. Maybe get some PC3200 memory and update to latest BIOS and see what happens?

Well im thinking its not the memory cuz im not pushing its limits when I get to higher multipliers. At 12.5 it only goes up to 178 or so. Maybe if I up the voltages on the memory? I dunno Ive never tried that though. Also Ive tried changing the ratio and keeping the memory speed low. The CPU still doesnt like above 185 even at 10x mult =(

Im "sol" enlighten me on your lingo please haha.

But yea this is why im trying to figure out how to unlock the higher multipliers.

well, if you weren't joking (where have you been these last few years?) SOL stands for $hit outta Luck in my mind, i'm sure there are other versions too :), like stranded on land...ha ha, but who uses that one.
