Six years ago neighbors bought a Presario at Radio Shack. They have
lost modems and surge protectors and ignored my advice to bond their
power and telephone grounding rods.
Two weeks ago a nearby lightning strike wiped out everything tied to
their phone line, including their PC. After it's turned on, a light
indicates that it spends awhile reading the hard disk, but the monitor
stays in the sleep mode. This is also true with my monitor, with is
known to be good.
If the monitor never gets a green light, does that prove the trouble is
on the motherboard? On the video jack, a multimeter shows an open on
one pin that should be a ground. A scope shows no signal on any pin,
with 13 pins at ground and 2 pins at 5 V.
