My brand new Moto 710 has a kind of blue spotted pattern on the front
cover where the time, date, etc. is. I can't find a way to change it
and it's really pretty ugly. Does anyone know a way?

Can I download and upload to the 710 with a usb cable? Will Windows see
it as a drive? How am I supposed to remove the pictures I take, or
upload ringtones I've created?

I gather I could do this if I subscribed to the web,but I really have no
use for that and it seems strange to do it just for a couple of
ringtones and some not very good pictures.

Is there a group specifically devoted to the 710?

TIA

Louise

I see you have gotten a new phone. I hope it solves the reception
problems you were having. I think it is an excellent phone. The
speaker phone is loud. It has no problem making, holding and receiving
calls my that others did.

To answer your questions.

1. Unfortunately there is no way to change the patterns on the outside
display. They do change if you choose a different color scheme. You
can also assign a picture to a caller. The picture will appear on the
outside screen when that person calls. I have gotten used to them and
don't really care any more. The outside display is large and bright.
It can easily be read in direct bright sunlight.

2. With the current Version of the 710 software you can not transfer
any ringtones to your phone. You can, however, use any digital picture
you have on your computer as wallpaper. You have to make it small
enough using your computer software. You can purchase a transflash
card for your phone, copy the pictures to that and either use it from
the card or transfer it to your phone. I have one that has an adapter
so it can also be used in my daughter's digital camera. I'm not
familiar with USB cable usage so I can't help you there.

3. There is a forum dedicated to the 710 here
http://www.howardforums.com/
If you scroll down and open the Verizon link you will see Temporary
V710 Discussion at the top. It's not so temporary since it has been
there since the phone has come out. There you will find alternative
ways to get around the ring tone transfer issue but you may not want
to use them unless you really know what you are doing. You will also
find many other topics of interest for the 710.

I would be interested to know if the 710 has helped with your
reception problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the information and I will check out howardforums

YES - this phone has made a world of difference in my reception/signal
problems - in fact, I don't seem to have any problems. It gets and
holds a good signal in most parts of my apartment. In one notoriously
bad area, it sometimes has one bar - but it holds that bar and the other
person doesn't notice any decline in transmission. And, this is without
my pulling out the antenna.

This phone seems to have the same signal and transmission capacity as
the old StarTacs. I'm amazed at the difference. And I agree, the
speakerphone is also quite good.

I must say however, it will be the phone I love to hate :-) It is too
big and too heavy.

I had a hard time deciding between the 710 and the Samsung 670 which is
..7 ounces lighter and also smaller. I chose the 710 because of how many
times I've heard about its superior signal ability.

I'm tempted however, to get a 670 while I'm within the 15 days, and try
it out. But I suspect I'll end up back to the 710 because it's quite
outstanding. And I can just picture them at the VZ store if I came back
to get the 710, which they too recommended, after all.....

I know the 670 is digital only but if the reception were as good, I
wouldn't care and would trade analog for a smaller lighter phone. What
little I've read, and techs and salespeople I've talked to, always give
the edge to the 710 and it's probably what I'll stay with.

Do you have any knowledge of the signal ability of the 670 vs the 710?

Thanks.

Louise

The 670 has a reputation for good signal reception as well but it I
think the 710 is better. While I have only made a call with one once I
noted that it had a good sound quality. My friend has one has no
complaints.

As for the size of the 710, I really didn't notice it after a while. I
have gotten used to the few things that I thought were negative about
htis phone. I have even grown to like the outside display. There is
one part of my house I could never use a cellphone without dropping a
call. With the . Like you, I can use it there without extending the
antenna.

My 2 cents. Keep this phone. It is a proven performer in reception. I
have very small hands but I think the 670 is too small. I like the
keypad on the 710. It is very visible in low light conditions. Have
you noticed that it only lights when needed?

After all your problems with your old phone, hopefully this will be
your answer. Good luck

Can you also use the transflash to transfer MP3 files to the 710 use as
ringtones?

Thanks for your thoughtful response. No, I didn't realize it only
lights when needed - in fact, I noticed it wasn't lit and thought I'd
messed up a setting!

I guess it's a keeper

I don't know - I don't have a transflash card. I'm under a vague
impression that Verizon disabled the transflash ability of the phone but
I'm not at all sure of that.

Try changing the color settings by hitting the menu settings, then go to the
Settings Icon, select number 2 Personalize, then Color Style, then select
the color you want.

The current version of the phone software specifically disallows MP3
transfers from the TF to the phone's internal memory, where they must be
to be used as ringtones. You can transfer pictures back and forth, or
move MP3 *to* the TF, but not the other way. The stated purpose of this
restriction is to protect their $$$ GetItNow service. There are other
ways to do this transfer. One exploits an interesting interaction of
features which allows you to do the transfer. Others involve alterations
to the phone's internal configuration. See www.howardforums.com,
"Temporary V710 Discussion" subsection under the Verizon Wireless
section for details.
