Prime95: Just about the most CPU-intensive program ever developed. I get the highest CPU temps with this program than any other. It's great for testing both CPU and memory stability.

SiSoft Sandra. Tests everything for stability, has a burn-in feature that just loops different hardware testing for stability. It's pretty good.

3DMark2001. Just loop it. It tests the interaction between your computer and the video card. Consider it a game that runs itself. You can check stability by watching for artifacts, particularely in the Dragothic game test. Look for streaks and corrupted pixels.

WCPUID. Just gives you an overview of your computer's settings. Take screenshots to brag.

Just a note. I'm not Prime95 stable, but I am stable in every other benchmark test. I only get problems arising when my CPU temps get to 50 degrees. At that point, the computer locks and I get BSODs. Before that it's stable as anything. Usually I run about 48 degrees. I ride the edge, but it's fun. Only problem is, computer doesn't work on hot days :( Gotta downclock then.

Thanks that was very helpfull. Now here's another question for you how do you tell the difference between a thouroughbred A and B core? I bought my 1800+ around the time when the new core was coming out I'm pretty sure it's the locked A core but when I was screwing around in the bios of my A7n8x and I didn't think you could adjust core voltage at all if it is locked? I was able to change the voltage it seemed though I reset the bios before I rebooted.
I think it had to do with my crappy 333 ram not wanting to run at 166mhz when I rebooted because it did not want to post till the next morning but thats set the right way now
Anyhow if the processor is truly locked can you adjust the voltage at all? And if it is locked and still letting me adjust the bios what would happen if I cranked it up then tried to boot?

I downloaded the above programs and I have some questions..

1.) In Sandra.. there are all kinds of Modules and I don't know what module to run or not... I have the free version so a lot of the modules don't even work unless you register.. when Tom's Hardware does tests using Sanda.. what module(s) do they run? What should I run to actually test the system.. it's sort of hard for a new coming to benchmarking to understand all the different test results and specs.. any help would be appreciated..

2.) I ran the Prime95 torture test overnight and the next day I woke up and my computer was just sitting at Windows XP desktop and Prime95 wasn't open. Does Prime95 automatically shut down and close if it fails or something? It was running fine for about an hour before I went to sleep, keeping my CPU pinned at 100% and utilizing practically all of my Ram.. but then in the morning it wasn't there running anymore.. do you know how this could be? If the program failed shouldn't it at least stay open and just show an error message?

Thanks for all the help.. I appreciate it..

And if you have to pick the BEST programs to run to test your hardware and benchmark it.. what would they be?

My system:
P3 850mhz (100fsb), 512 Micron PC133, Abit SE6, IBM Deskstar 75gxp (60 gig @ 7200rpm), Hercules 3D Prophet 2 GTS (64 meg), SB Live MP3, Pioneer 16x DVD, Asus 45x CD-Rom

In Sandra, just run the tests you want, such as the CPU and memory burn-in tests.

If Prime95 wasn't open, it may have crashed. Yes, it usually reports an error, but it may not have this time. Did you check the system tray?

yeah it wasn't there... it was totally closed..

UNLESS... the power went out in my house and the computer restarted.. I don' tknow.. maybe I will try it again tonight... how long should that program be able to run for to determine your cpu are VERY STABLE?

hey and while we are on the point.. I have an Asus CUV4X board in that computer and when I go to "Shutdown" in Windows XP Pro, my computer never turns off.. it just says "It's now safe to turn your computer off".. but what is the setting called that I need to change to make it shut off automatically and where is this setting.. the Bios maybe?

Thanks

Curious you mention the power outtage, I think it could more have been that your computer encountered an instability issue due to heat perhaps, and restarted on its own... That would do it.

What version of windows do you have? I never got my computer to automatically shut down until I put XP on it. With 98 and 95 it would always get me to do it. Same machine, too.

I like Toast for Athlons (Durons, Tbirds, Tbreds included). Supposedly it performs the maximum number of instructions in the minumum number of cycles, that is it fully loads the pipe, continuously.

This really boosts the CPU temps.

Shutdown all background tasks before running Toast.
