I'm trying to do what i thought was a simple overclock just by futzin with the multiplier / fsb. i can change the settings and boot just fine, but windows xp prof wont load... i'll either get a missing file error (?) or a blue screen saying i mucked something up and to reboot. heres my crappy system

asus a7v333-x
xp 2600+ 333
512 crucial 2700
ati radeon 9000 pro 64mb
i suppose i put some kinda hard drive in here too

any suggestions?

oddly enough it just started working... i only adjusted the system clock. multiplier is 12.5 sc is 174. Temperature is 32C. With stock fan how much further can i safely take it?

With that temp you can take it much further... just stop when the system gets instable (which can be fixed by increasing VCore) or the temps get near 60 C.

ok. im running sandra burn or something like that and get some oddities... like the CPU temp is being measured at 51C wheres AsusProbe gives me a CPUtemp of 35C. multiplier still 12.5 clock 184 running 2.3GHz seems stable to me. why would i be getting 2 different temp readings?

Well SANDRA isn't a good temp monitoring app... but PCProbe (also called Anal Probe) is also worse. Download MBM 5 from http://mbm.livewiredev.com... it is on of the best hardware monitoring apps.
