Hey All! ;D

I want to get a better radiator to replace my swiftech h20-8500 beast. (Actually more like a puppy, thats why I wanna change. I only have a midtower, and the watercooler's tubes i have right now are 3/8 internal diameter and 1/2 inch outside diameter. Will those fit around the barbs of the black ice extreme or blackice extreme 2?

Also, if i get that rad, should i use it as well as my swiftech rad or just use the bix?

One last question... I am getting a new cpu, the 1700+, and i have a tube of arctic silver 3 that has been sitting for approx three months with lots left in it,, can i use it or is it expired and i have to get a new tube?

Thanks

Rob

your tubing will almost definitely fit over the 1/2" barbs, most 3/8" tubing will. if it doesn't, put it in some boiling water for a few seconds to get it soft, then stretch it over.

after you get the new rad, i'd only use that, personally. i think the 2nd rad will add more resistance for very little extra cooling. you're probably better off with higher flow through your system, but hey, you can experiment to see which works best if you want

as for the AS3, it will separate over time, but i've left mine for more than 3 months and used it again without any ill effects.

and finally, with respect to the 1700+, how much research have you done on it? people throw around the name "1700+" like they're all created equal, but the truth is that certain batches were binned lower, or yield at a certain site at a certain date was particularly good, so i recommend you get one of the batches that are known for being good overclockers. http://www.excaliberpc.com has them, i THINK the JIUHB XPMW0310s were good, at least i know people were loving the WPMW and UPMWs, and no one knew what the differences were between them, so i would presume they were good. but i'd go to an AMD-specific forum and find out what's doing well these days
here's a link to the JIUHB XPMW0310 chip
excaliberpc charges more for them b/c they're known to overclock well

Hey LT Blue - first off thanx for your reply, it seems as though your one of a kind, or the only person with smarts bout this crap.

Here is the stepping of the 1700+ I ordered... please tell me what you think?

AXDA1700DLT3C
JIUHB0319VPMW

I am not too sure what that stuff means so... I thought it was all numbers for AMD to use.

If I stretch my hosesto fit over the 1/2 inch barbs, will the hose leak at all because the hose is stressed or something? I really dont want that at all. Currently I use a swiftech h20-8500 kit...

And as for the arctic silver, does it have any kind of a defined shelf life, or just sorta fades over time?

Best regards,

Rob

hey does anyone know what would be a good 120 mm fan for the black ice extreme 2?

throw out your suggestions!

i don't happen to know if the week 19 in 2003 (hence the 0319) was a good batch, but the DLT3Cs do well in general

and no, the hose won't leak if you fit it over the 1/2" fittings

i couldn't find any information on the AS3 website (nor on the tube of it i have) about the AS3 settling, though i know it does. in any case, i wouldn't worry about it

for the 120mm fan, how quiet do you want? the evercool aluminum 120mm fan (plastic fins, though they're silver colored) moves 85CFM @ 32 dBA, which is the best ratio i know of. the fan is not silent by any means (like any fan, it only gets louder when you put resistance on it, such as a radiator), but it is among the quieter fans that are out there. you can find it at directron, among a million other places.

but you know, if you get the BIX2 you're gonna need 2 120mm fans...

anyway, that's a great heatercore (technically it's a heatercore, not a radiator), i'm envious =)

How about a Panaflo 120mm low or medium speed fan. they seem to work well with a bit of back pressure (as what would be created with a radiator)

hey thanks for all your help LT! Do you know if the bix2 will fit 4 fans, 2 120 mm's on each side, (like the swiftech rad has fans on each side?) and if it will take fans on both sides of the rad, are the mounting holes for the fans already drilled on each side?

my black ice xtreme does have holes on both sides, and depending on how you mount the fans, yes you can put fans on both sides of the radiator with no problem. 4 silent 120mm fans might not be a bad idea.

this papst fan is fairly quiet, 26dBA. it's $20 at directron though, too much for me

You can allways do the "7v trick" on it

what exactly is the 7v trick and how does one perform such a task?

The 7V trick is a simple mod with very few risks... unless you have a [-peep-] fan that shorts itself. Pretty rare though.

If you look at a standard molex connector of a fan (not the 3 pin one)... you will see it uses 2 of 4 wires.
The 4 wires are:
Yellow = 12v
Black = ground (0v)
Black = ground (0v)
Red = 5v

Of these your casefan only uses 2, the 12v and one of the ground lines:
12v - 0v = 12v naturally.
If you swap over the black ground line to the red then you get:
12v - 5v = 7v and lower fan speed.

Note: you do all this on the fan header side, not the molex conenction of the PSU.

you can also swap the 12v for 5v, getting 5v to the fan, but many fans wont start properly with 5v.

so i am assuming this doesnt work on all the fans I have with a 3 pin molex connector?

svol

Champion
It is also possible with the 3 pin fans. Just remove the red and black fan from the 3 pin socket. Stick the red one in the 12V and the black in the 5V of a molex connector. Place the one wire 3 pin connector on the motherboard for RPM monitoring.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole :eek:

Trixta....you are the crazy one....here are the exact dimensions of the Black Ice Extreme radiator as listed on their website

quoted:
Compact 150.4 x 128.6 x 43mm (5.9 x 5 x 1.69 inch) dimensions allows it to fit inside most mid-tower cases...
