Proper amount of memory for a 64bit system?

2GB minimum according to Microsoft, but i would go with 8 as a starting point.

2gb is the minimum as ss202sl stated, but I would say 4gb would be more than enough for a decent computer. If you do plan on gaming then 8 gb is good, if you do not then 4gb is enough for you.

any 64 bit i would personally use 4gb as the lowest amount. 8 isnt really nessisary unless you plan on doing more than everyday stuff lick browsing the internet and email and typing word documents etc etc

1 GB is minimum requirement for 32BIT, and 2 GB is minimum requirement for 64BIT, but if you using 64BIT 4 GB is recomende.

Agreed.

4 GB would do pretty much everything you need even gaming unless your are looking to max out the very latest titles and even then 8 GB really isn't needed.

However as said with prices as they are it really makes no sense to go with anything else than 8 GB.

Put it this way, if I had 4 GB of Ram already I wouldn't be buying another 4 to go with it.

If I was building a new PC from scratch I would get an 8 GB matched set for it.

For modern gaming I'd recommend 8 as minimum with 16 as a preference. But, I do things like using RAM disks for game assets so that extra space gets used.

I would say 8gb is more than enough RAM for gaming, I don't know of any game that utilizes 8 gb. Though the 16 gb would make sense if you are running several games in the background that are minimized and on top of that you got something like 50 tabs open on your browser.
