im looking at the thermalright slk 900u series, these seem to offer the best cooling potential at the lowest noise, whats everyone else recomend?
im going to drop a 92mm fan @ 1800 rpm's on the heatsink, itll blow 35 cf/m will this be sufficient? i like it cause its quiet, only 25 db's

anything better? id like to keep temps around 40ish, 50 under full load is acceptable

and im not looking at watercooling, but i will of course be using arctic silver,

ive also considered sanding the heatsink face just too polish it up, anyone know if this significantly aids cooling?

Don't know about better, but less expensive...
Just got a 2500+, and am tryin the Speeze 80mm from new egg.
Got both, the $7 all aluminum and the $9 Falconrock

The $9 faclonrock works well, like 41C AT 10.5*200...
Havin trouble gettin much higher, but coolin is OK, havent seen <45C yet...
Just now puttin a bit more vcore to it...

And Yea! Sanding/Polishin the HS does help!
I use std grit auto rubbing compound - shines em right up!
Good for at least 1C usually 2...

Personally I went for the Swiftech MCX462+ with 80mm tornado. It cooled my Barton at 215FSB and 12 multiplier(2580mhz) at only 31 idle, and 39 load(PCMARK2002 looped 30 times). Temperature readings from motherboard monitor 5.

It is the best atm.

And IIRC they came with an already very smoot base so sanding is probably not needed.

I love my Delta 60HP 7000 RPM fan that puts out more dB then CFM

Well the SLK900-U isn't a quite cooler, if you use a silent fan, you'll get fairly bad performance. You'll need to put a 92mm tornado on the SLK900 for the heatsink to really shine. If you need something quite, the Vantec Aeroflow would be a good heasink for you, and it should hold the CPU under 55C under load at 2300mhz

2300mhx from a xp2500+ - ??? maybe, if your lucky...
Just got a brand new one. Had probs with new Epox 8RDA+, flashed up to current bios and nForce drivers, seams to have fixed. Now 11*200(2200)installs OS and runns all, stable... Cooling OK, Speeze 80mm all aluninum cheapie, and quiet, always <44C...

But this xp2500+ gives out about 2260mhx - no mater how ya approach it.
Can do 10*215, so memory is OK >200fsb...

But trying mutlipliers 11.5, 12, & 12.5 and I can't get to 2300mhz.
At 12*188 Sandra CPU test looses it! Does the same thing with other multipliers every time i get much above 2250 total mhz... Bumpin vcore to 1.75 does complete tests at 2260mhz, but its about done - all this one's got!
Better keep this one around 2200 for stability - not all that bad - and it runs that at 1.65(stock) vcore...

But these inexpensive Speeze 80mm coolers are QUIET! - and cool well!
Both the all aluminum and the Falconrock do just about the same! idle 40/41C and ya just can't push it above 45C. (and that's with Radioshack compund)
Those (big) Speeze 80mm fan coolers cool very well, and Quiet!

Good luck on the draw for 2300mhx outa every XP2500+...

Socked the vcore to it - 1.85
Pedal to the medal - 12*196 (2352mhx) is all she'll do!
(still POSTIN, but can't pass Sandra CPU tests any higher...)
and cheapo Speeze hangin right in there, 47C runnin tests right up to the end.

Well, maybe every XP2500+ WILL do 2300mhx - sockin voltage to it!!!

2.3 GHz is a very nice OC... it is above the average. But indeed you need to get yourselve a good OC core stepping like you have for such OCs.

I'm going to select one myselve to assure a high OC.

How ya gonna "select" one to insure core steppping?
I order from Newegg, watch reviews to get some idea whats shipping, but its really luck of the draw what arives... I should have coppied down the exact numbers on this CPU, but i've closed this one up now and have backed down around 2220 and 1.7vcore for its workin life. Dontknow, either 11*200 or 12*185 sure runs smooth and stable, passin every test(all nite long) - and being able to endure OS install probes, so I can't complain much... Its got aceptable Zip, over 3050 SandraMem bandwidth, Think it'll be a nice real world workin box!

But selecting exactly what ya get would be real nice!
Outa 4 XP1700+'s recently, i've got 1 Acore, 3 Bcores - and onea the Bcores 1700+ will run right along with this 2500+. From Newegg it's definitely luck of the draw... but all are killer bang for the buck!!!

I'm nicely suprized with this Epox 8RDA+ - great sound! And
flashed with current release bios, it POSTs up a nForce2 Ultra! - That's nice, but it still doesnt get the numbers my A7n8x will, which will get 3250+ Sandramem score at 200fsb with a 1700+! Close(<1%), but no Cigar...

Now if I could "select" (and i need to put together another value system to upgrade sis-inlaw's pII400), i'd use this 8RDA+ again, but
i'd "select" onea those xp700+ "B" DLT3C - from what i hear they auto select 1.5Vcore and when run at 1.65 about all will go >2400mhz(12*200) no problem and rock solid - Wowsa...
Now that'd be the king of great VALUE - a mobo and 2400mhz processor for the price of one A7n8x mobo!!!

So where can i "Select" a xp1700+ "B" DLT3C?
And what's the good stepping code for the xp2500+?

Well selecting a CPU in a online store is rather difficult, you have to ask them to pic a good one. But if you can find a local store that sells trail (sop not boxed) AMD CPUs for a nice price you just go to the store and ask them if you might pick out a CPU because you're an overclocker.

For the T-bredB this is the row of core steppings from normal (or even bad) OC to awsome OC (with the T-bredB all core stepping end with B):
1700+ and 1800+ : JIUCB < JIUGB < JIUHB
over 2000+ : AIUAB < AIUCB < AIUGB < AIUHB

And the Barton:
AIUAA < AQUCA < AQXDA
There are also some new Barton stepping codes:
I estimate the AQUCB is equal to the AQUCA and that the AQXCA and AQXEA are the same as the AQXDA in OC performance.

Besides that you want to look for a core with a greyish colour and not a purple one. The grey ones are cut from the center of the waffer and are the purest which means they OC the best, the purple ones are from the side and OC less.

First select a stepping and then try to find the best one among them by colour.

Hey svol, where did you find out about the steppings? I'm going to dump my 2500+ and get the best stepped 2500+ out there.

I'm getting 2.34ghz stable (203x11.5) from my chip right now, but that was only after going to water cooling and a Tt cooler on the north bridge, and upgrading to a rev. 2.00 board from my 1.04 A7N8X Dlx.

And scottchen, I'm still calling BS on your speeds, especially your 66mhz memory overclock. But whatever.

umheint0 what do i need to do to prove it to you? Why would I BS what's the point?

I hate Computers! I could only overclock my Barton 2500+ to 2645mhz. My Radeon 9700pro core/mem speed won't go above 410/720. I really hate computers!

too bad I don't have a digital camera, if I do i would've taken picture of the pc2700 ram then SHOW YOU the 230mhz frequency in BIOS.

umheint Just because you can't get your CPU high enough, doesn't mean other people can't get higher. So please PI$$ off. I'm not in the mood for a fight.

Why would you BS?

Why would a ricer say his shizzy civic has 700hp?
Why does a guy say his penis is 19" long?
Why do grandma's brag that their grandkids just got accepted to Harvard?

They're showing off.

I'm not suggesting you do, just simply laying the facts out. You're claiming to have a 700hp civic just because you got a cherry bomb exhaust and low profile 19" rims. Just a little iffy.

Not saying it CAN'T happen though, just really, REALLY suspicious...

Ive seen a few guys running a barton at over 2400mhz on stock or close to stock voltage. As for memory, all it takes is a little extra juice and lower timings and you can get anywhere from an extra 15mhz- 70mhz if your lucky. Hell my generic crappy 133mhz ram would run at 150mhz on stock voltage.

I don't have the link in the favourites of this PC, but I will post it as soon as I'm behind my first PC again (should be tomorrow)... help me to remind though.

Anyway why should it be BS? You never took a look at the Barton OC speed obviously... as 2.6 GHz can be reached very easly if you got the right core. But yeah 66 MHz for memory is pretty high, but NOT impossible... I've seen it before in memory reviews.

awesome, thanks svol.

Do you happen to know which Barton core is the best stepping? I'm assuming that the AQXDA or AQXEA are the best OCers, but I would like to know the facts from someone who knows.
