This is my first time planning to buy an Intel system, for AMD there's certain core stepping which are good overclockers, is it the same for Intel? From what I heard 2.4C is really good overclocker, just wandering how high I can get it to with SLK900U and 92mm Vantec Tornado.

I hate Computers! I could only overclock my Barton 2500+ to 2645mhz. My Radeon 9700pro core/mem speed won't go above 410/720. I really hate computers!

1 other thing, what's the best overclockable motherboard I should buy with the CPU so I can get the most performance out of this set. Thanks.

I am an overclocking noob and I have my 2.4c running at 2.89ghz using stock cooling. Its running at 27C idle and 43C loaded (or so the ASUS probe would have me believe). I'm sure you could get in the range of 3.2ghz or more with a Tornado.

The 2.4 Malaysia L311**** and L310**** all overclock well. But most Malaysian chips will do 3ghz easily. The highest ive seen cooled by a 900u is 3.6ghz. But if you get above 3ghz you will be lucky. Its kinda like a barton 2500. If you get it to go above 2.3ghz you are lucky.

290mhz fsb with this board and a top performer. Also note how these scores are lower than what tom gave in his recent review for the asus board. My AMD setup is faster than the p4c 800 3ghz combo.

Doesn't the Ram have a big part to play in all of this? We don't what ram he is using. If you want to overclock to a high level you might max-out the ram. That’s assuming your overclocking using the FSB. For some reason my system goes unstable at just 220FSB no matter how high the voltage is.
Is it hard to unlock the multiplier on this chip?
I don't how that other gets 27c idle on a stock. I get 42c idle but I’m using a different mobo (MSI PE865). Are you using any thermal paste at all?

Reply to JeanLuc

All you need is some 233mhz (pc3700) memory and run the fsb at 5:4 to memory to get 290mhz fsb/230mhz memory.

Are you sure you have to have Pc3700ram, currently my PC2700 can do 230, when i relaxed the timing, I guess when I buy 3200 or 3500 and relax the timing, shouldn't it do 250?

If you're lucky again.

I love my Delta 60HP 7000 RPM fan that puts out more dB then CFM

oh ok, then I guess I shouldn't push my luck and get the 3700.

I know this sounds like a newbie question, Intel mobo does have separate controls for FSB and AGP/PCI right? Like the nForce2 series?

Where I live, the MSI 865P NEO2 is the cheapest mobo, is it any good? I've saw a lot of advertisements on tomshardware.

Sorry Mask, but my dad wants to sell that to somebody for a high price since it's so nicely tweaked. Well I have to thank everybody on this forum giving my hints and support, I couldn't have done it without you guys.

It's a fine board, but not one I would choose.

Crashman which 1 would you recommend? 1 last question, is Dual Channel DDR really worth bothering with, because from where I'm gonna buy, 2 256 cost so much more than 1 512. Just wandering if the 2 256 is worth 30 canadian dollars more than 1 512.

dual channel can help intel cpus alot more than it ever will help amd cpus...as intel cpus can use the extra banwith provided by dual ddr unlike amd cpus that are limited to a ddr fsb...i would say it should really help...but only the benchmarks know for sure...

So easy to fry yet tastes so good...

Of course you need a Dual Channel capable chipset like the 865 and 875 series, but yes it helps a lot with Intel CPU's. You see, Intel uses a Quad Data Rate CPU bus. In order to get Double Data Rate memory to have the same bandwidth at the same clock speed, you MUST use Dual Channel in order to maintain a constant data rate.

Intel uses Dual Channel to make the memory bus twice as wide, thereby doubling the memory bandwidth a single channel would offer.

Thanks guys, just wandering does the Asus p4p800 support OCZ PC3500EL 2x256 DDR ram?

I would recommend the ASUS P4P800 as an all round board and it should work with all memory out there. And yes, you need to run in dual channel config or you will get 60% of bandwith (3 gigs a second compared to 5 gigs a second).BTW are you selling your 9700pro aswell?

Yeah I got my Sapphire 9800pro, I sold my old setup for 1600 canadian eventhough I only spent less than half of that to buy all the parts. LOL

With the same as my 9700pro cooling, (Zalman heatpipe with 80mm casefans on both sides), and copper ramsinks, managed to get 475core and not much memory only to 375x2 750, I was a little dissappointed by the memory. Thought I might do a little voltage mod on it.
