Now that THG have reported that intel want to remove PAT from the 865 chips, I was wondering whether it's worth getting one now that still has it, even though I don't intend buying the rest of the components till october.

Will the 875 be reduced in price by then to make it competetive with a currently priced 865 board?

If the 865 is the way to go, what board would you buy? I'm probably going to have 1-2 Gb of RAM and a P4 2.8 (though I might go higher - depends on intel's price cuts in october). I already have a 9500 pro, and a zalman cooler for it (going for a relatively quiet pc after my current noise box) so any motherboard suggestions need to be
a) big enough to cope with the zalman cooler, with
b) enough room around the cooler for a northbridge heatsink (no fan).

http://www.overclockers.co.uk have most of the motherboards I've looked at, and the zalman cooler - spec sheet here: http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/zm80a-hp.htm. Their prices are fairly good - and I'd rather save money than burn it for 2% improvement in performance (hence 865 rather than 875).

I'd like to go for a moderate overclock (hopefully 233x4=933) but nothing too major. The only problem I can see is memory timings (but they may well have sorted them out (i.e. PC3500 with LL) by october) and the required space for the 9-5's heatsink. The computer will be used mainly for CAD (hence the memory - and the 9-5 works fine as a Fire GL X1) and other office work, with a few games maybe.

Cheers, Peter

Doubt so... the 875 will remain the high-end board for a long time, probably till the end of the year. The 865 will also stay in place and the low-end sector will get the single-channel 865 in a couple of weeks to replace the 845.

I love my Delta 60HP 7000 RPM fan that puts out more dB then CFM
