Hi,
I've always been happy with the broadband from TalkTalk, but the past week I'm having terrible loading/video bufferring.
- I've called them, and they say they've reset it from their end.
- It's not the router as I've replaced it.
- It's not the PC I'm useing as its the same story on my Laptop/Alt PC.
When I'm trying to watch YouTube, Megavideo, Streetfire videos after about 5 minutes BAM! it just stops buffering, and it dosn't matter how many times you refresh the page, it will not buffer. You'll be lucky to get pass 2% after a good hour or so.
What the hell is going on? Anyone else experiancing this? I'm in London BTW.

^ To be honest, this is the first time, and I was pretty happy with them untill last week. I mean, I can't even go online and play MW or MW2 for 30 seconds before the connect is lost or "interrupted" then the server kicks you out...
It's terrible. Even though I'm a PC tech, and even though I keep telling them that, they still try to take me through the most stupidiest and longest steps in slow motion. I tell them to speed up and that I'm not dumb... And no. I think they longer they keep you on the phone talking, the more money they get??!
It took me 40 minutes to get of the phone, and too what? 2 minutes after they reset it from their end again... No YT videos loading... Nothing.

^ I know right. I feel like crap. I thought talktalk was a independent company, now its just insane. Little companies give you the better service. Now its just spun out of control.
I can't belive I just renuewed the contract with the for another 18 months. Although I could get it canceled within 14 days.
If I did, who would you suggest I go to? That offeres phone line rental and broadband for around £20-£25?

Sorry but I've been out of the loop on this one for a while. Shared house came with broadband so I've not looked in a couple of years. The last time I did though there was a small independent out of Sheffield way that was very well regarded by the folks on Broadband Review, might be worth having an ask on there and seeing what people come up with.

I am with Be ( www.bethere.co.uk )for around 3 years, very happy 17.50£/month unlimited up to 24Mbps and static IP, I am getting 12Mbps with the standrad profile, my friend who lives closer to central gets 14. You have option to change 3 profiles speed/standard/reliability and gaming on/off, You can change them online up to 6 times a month. They also have 8 Mbps for £13.50.
It is sometimes a bit slow for web browsing in the afternoons but I guess that is the problem with all providers. Downloads however always work full speed even afternoons.
They do not offer phone line so You need to get phone line from someone else or keep Your TalkTalk. I am using Talk Talk phone line myself.
Also O2 seems to work fine for friends. BT and Virgin seems to work fine for some and not for others. Had a Tiscali before, totally unusable. Advertised 8Mbps, real max speed 2.2. If You download in peek hours they throttle Your speed in the afternoons/evenings to unusable speeds like 50kbps.
Talk Talk also seems to work fine if You do not need more then 40GB/month traffic and do not abuse their fair usage policy and do not get throttled speeds. So You might have problems with phone line/filters ect if You are experiencing problems.
If You are willing to give Be a try PM Your e-mail to me, I will recommend You and we both get one month free. You can choose 12 or 3 month contract. You will need to pay connection fee £24 and £20/month instead of £17.50 if You choose 3 month contract. Connection is free for 12 month contract.

Everybody is on BT line unless it is Virgin. All other supliers just rent line from BT. Look at me: I have Talk Talk phone, I pay them for my telephone, they pay BT for line rental and I have BE broadband on the same BT line. If I change phone or broadband provider i still keep the same BT line running to my house just pay another company. That is unless You have Virgin because they have own cable and phone lines.
Other companies buy services in bulk from BT an then resell to customers. What changes is service level, bundles and prices.
The same goes for most of broadband suppliers that operate on BT lines, they buy in bulk and resell using all the BT equipment. Only some companies have their own equipment in BT centrals connected to BT lines like BE, Bulldog, Pipex ect

Depends on what your contract states. If you can show they are never able to provide a reasonable average of the speed they sold you then Sale of goods act would kick in.. could be worth a try if you fancy being a retentive log submitter.the way they get round the Sale of goods act is by saying (UP TO)
it was on tv.

Read the small print and see if an CIR is indicated. It's all a question of what a court would consider reasonable. Whilst they say 8Mb peak if it only ever gave you 1Kb then that would not be reasonable. Likewise loss of service for a few hours a month would be 'reasonable' but not for weeks at at time.

This sucks, it really does. For example when I open up uTorrent, and even if its only downloading at 10kbps, my internet connection to the browser is killed instantly. And thats just an example,
I was downloading SP3 from Microsoft, I attemtped 3 different days, 3 different times of the day and it speed was no more then 15-20kbps.
This is terrible, and it dosn't help trying to speak with them. (PS: Does anyone know if it charges us to call them in the first place? I've never actually checked if it did.)

Ahh.. that might well not be your ISP. Take a long hard look at your router, every time I set up a DMZ back at my folks for a bit of torrent fun I used to flood the network leaving every other node unable to so much as get a google home page. Some routers just can't cope with the high number of simultaneous connections you can get on a torrent

Matter of interest, do you know how far you are from your telephone exchange? As has been posted, Talk Talk - owned by Carphone Warehouse as are AOL, Tiscali and others - depend on BT's antiquated Third World Broadband system. Here in Milton Keynes, supposedly the most modern town in the country, BT's predecessors the GPO saved a few quid by using aluminium instead of copper for the lines when the infrastructure went in so if you have copper you're ahead of me and if you have fibre optic, you're jolly lucky.

It's not much better in Manchester. Whilst much of the city got wired by Nynex lots of bits didn't. Try working for NTL, being entitled to the full staff pack for only £10 a month and then finding the house you moved to is about 250m from being a valid location.. no service
I'm still half tempted to try setting up a community Wi-Fi round here one day.

[#0005ff]The ntl lines round here are the same as BT's and although Virgin took ntl over, they have no plans to upgrade so when the analog signal shuts off, there will be no cable TV in this area. I'm not sure the users know that one yet. It used to be strongly rumoured that satellite dishes were against planning laws so a lot of people went to ntl to avoid breaking those rules. Of course there couldn't possibly have been a stitch up deal betwen the company and the council of some councillors - could there?
