Unlocking Multiplier for AMD XP chips?

Hi everyone, may be this is a stupid question but I just need your confirmation since most of you are experts here.

I have been reading a lot of articles about OC AMD XP chips and come to the point many said that you have to unlock the chip by means of physically joining the L1 dots (whatever name it should be) to be able to change the multiplier. My question is this still true up to now? Or are there some new MOBO that already doest the job for you? If so, could you name some for references? Thanks and best regards.

This depends on your CPU. All Bartons, Thoroughbred-B and some late Thorougbred-A are factory unlocked, you only need a mobo/chipset which can do the job for you, that's nForce2 mobo. Please note that if on Asus A7N8X, you can use the multiplier which is above your CPU default value. Example: A Thoroughbred-B 2600+ is default at 12.5, you can use any value below 12.5 but you can't use 13 and above.

If I agree with you... will you shut up?

The Barton core are not LOCKED, so motherboard will not"unluck" them because they are already unlocked! You only have to change the FSB and multiplier in the BIOS of your motherboard. And, of course, don't forget to do a BIOS update.

I suggest you the ABIT NF7 (Stereo sound)or NF7-S (Surround Sound) motherboard. It's a cheap nForce2 board, I was really impressed by it! I bouilt a system for a friend based on it. I own ASUS A7N8X and I must say that the ABIT offer more for the money.

Another point... Even the XP2500+ BARTON FSB is 333MHz (166 * 2), Buy DDR400 ram if you have spare money! You will be able to run your XP2500+ at 400Mhz FSB. So you will get close to XP3200+ performance and even more if you tweak everything correctly!

Ilike to help people here! It's a good commmunity! Don't forget to share your O/C and system building experience with us! We will help you get the most of your RIG.

NOTE : If you buy DDR400 Memory go for CL 2.5 module if you can afford it. This will boost your memory performance and this makes a good difference. Usually GOOD DDR333 module with CL 2.0/2.5 can beat cheap DDR400 modules CL 3.0.

Thanks, actually I dont know anything about memory, may be you can also give some advise here. I can find the following with price:

Corsair PC3200 512Mo DDR Twinx C2 (2x256Mo) 155,00 €
Corsair PC3200 512Mo DDR Twinx LL (2x256Mo) 199,50 €
TwinMos PC3200 256Mo 46,50 €
OCZ PC3200 256Mo Cas 2 79,00 €

See TwinMos is more than half the price of the other 2 brands. What do you think?

Again they're not fully unlocked... only for the lower or higher multipliers range (low=12.5x and lower, high=13x and higher). Some nForce2 mobo's seem to overwrite this and unlock the Barton/T-bredB for all multipliers.

I love my Delta 60HP 7000 RPM fan that puts out more dB then CFM

to add to svol...

indeed not all bartons are fully unlocked...

most mobos only unlock 4 of the 5 bits...the fifth bit controls unlocking 13x and up...the nf7 is one of the few that unlocks all 5 bits...

the ram with the lowest timmings will perform and overclock the best....

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP
