Well just finished building my first PC and I'm a little worried about my temps. I've got a P4 2.4C stock HSF on an Abit IS7 in a Sonata case w/ only the one stock 120 mm case fan. No OCing yet. It's in an A/C room that is never higher than 24C. My CPU temp is 51C (37~38 case temp) after idling for a while (read left on overnight on the BIOS screen).

Based on some of the posts I've read this seems a bit high. Is that due to inaccuracies in the motherboard (I've heard this mb reads high temps)? Even so does anyone think that number is too high?

I can't test the load temp yet becasue I'm having some vid card problems so I can't install Windows. What is a good range for that reading?

I'm going to install another 120 mm fan in the front in a day or two and see if that helps. I might overclock it a little if I feel the need so it seems I would need better cooling than I am getting.

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

It does seem a little high. Check to make sure you have clipped it down. When I did it I thought those leavers were going to snap!

I've got a similar setup I’m using a Antec Plusview1000 AGM case which came with 2 80mmfans with an and an exhaust system for case cooling.

My mainboard is the MSi FRS2I neo and it reads my p4 2.4C at around 42c idle. I know others here say there CPU runs at 35c idle on a stock H&F, but there using different main boards to me and you. That got me a bit worried at first so I phoned an Intel technician and he said 42c is normal. It probably something to do with were the manufactures position the temperature probe.

I thinking of overclocking the CPU to 3 Ghz, to do this I’m investing in a Thermalight SLK900. I’m not sure on the fan though. I was looking at the ‘Papst 8412 NG 80mm fan to compliment the SLK900. It supposed one of the highest quality and quietest fans you can get. Any thoughts?

Whilst I’m here anyone know how to make the latest CD-RW’s any quieter? I’m using a liteon 52X CD-RW.

Take off the heatsink, get rid of the stock pad, and get some arctic silver 3 on it. That should solve all your problem. Before I got my SLK900U, I could overclock to 3.4G under 50C. Now I'm flying high with SLK900U(and 92mm Tornado of course). I'm at 3.84 and load temp's around your idle temp.

I hate Computers! My P4 2.4C won't go above 3840mhz. My Sapphire 9800pro core/mem speed won't go above 490/790. I really hate computers!

First, thanks for the advice.

I've heard once you've melted the pad to the heatsink and CPU it is tough to get all the residue off. Any experience with that?

And I know to go to Arctic Silver website for instructions, just wanted to save you the key strokes.

Thanks for the advice.

LOL, try overclocking once you got Arctic silver 3 on, don't touch vcore, try to get around 3.3G, you should be able to get that with idle around 40C, and load around 45-50. Then run sandra, you'll beat anything, even the top. That makes me feel happy.

I have exactly the same board, processor and idle temp (it's creepy!) so you're not alone!

I have an IS7, 2.4C, Zalman CNPS-7000Cu, and Antec Sonta. At 2.4 I get around 48-49 deg C with 37 deg C case temp. It drops as low as 45 if the case side panel is left open. I think the Abit board temp readings aren't very accurate though.

I get crap overclocks with this setup though. I can't get past 2.8. PAT doesn't work either. Oh well, at least it's quiet.

SLK900U with 92mm Tornado is best of air-cool, period

First of all, I modded my case with a side-door fan and when room temp is at 25 I also get something like 45C.
Second, I didn't even know IS7 has PAT, Where can I activate it.
And last, I hope that when I get my SKL-900 I'll be able to overclock with no prob, currently I'm with my stock fan and don't bother trying yet.

Ytoledano you have 2.4C? with stock cool you should get to 3.3G

I think you mean that with stock cooler AND with normaly applied thermal pad I could get to 3.3. But in my case it ain't (there's something terribly odd there) so I bought some AS3 and while I was at it I bought the SKL-900.

Hmm that's weird, and you mean SLK900U?
