CPU Temp

I mistakenly posted the following on the wrong board.

I have a P4 2.4GHZ (200/800 bus) with an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe. I overclocked it 30% in the BIOS. At rest, the CPU temp is 45 C. If I max out the CPU (using SETI), the CPU temp goes up to 63 C. The MB temp stays constant at about 35C. (BTW, this is Phoenix, AZ in the summer.)

At what temperature should I start worrying about overheating? So far, everything has run perfectly with the overclocking. No crashes, no freezes, no problems at all.

Don´t worry about it, everything is fine, enjoy your system!!!

You shouldn´t really worry about it on a P4, not below 75°C anyways. But I believe some AMD CPUs will lock up the system at around 65°C and up.

Don't use AI overclock, the 30% overclock only increase the FSB but it doesn't increase the ram frequency, instead it set ram back down to 266(133x2) So overclock manually you'll gain wayy more performance. And try to scrape off the stock thermal pad, and apply some Arctic silver 3, this should help you by a lot. Last thing where were the temperature readings from, Asus Probe? If it is don't listen to it, because it could be as far as 10C off.

I hate Computers! My P4 2.4C won't go above 3840mhz. My Sapphire 9800pro core/mem speed won't go above 490/790. I really hate computers!

I am new to overclocking, so excuse my ignorance.

CPU-Z says my RAM frequency is 173.5 MHz and the FSB:DRAM is 3.2. That obviously adds up to 520 MHz, double the 260MHz FSB.

Should I leave it like this? Are there better settings and how do I apply them?

The ratio means your FSB:Memory Ratio, meaning if your memory's at 173.5 then your FSB must be 260.25, 260.25:173.5 That 173.5 you multiply it by 3 then DIVIDED by 2. You should use 5:4 ratio this should give you more performance.

You sure know your stuff. Unfortunately, I didn't see a way to set the ratio in the BIOS. It does have a setting to set the RAM frequency, but the choices were Auto, 266, 333, and 400.

266 means 3:2, 333 means 5:4, and 400 means 1:1.

Ok then your ram's meant to run at 200FSB but using 5:4 ratio you should get 250FSB. That is 1G fsb meaning you got a kickass processor.

I went into the BIOS and changed it the RAM to 5:4 (320MHz). It works. Yeah!

Thanks for the help. Now if I can get my 2.4 up to 3.8 like you, instead of my lousy 3.1. he he he I don't think I'll push it too far since I'm just an amateur.

I turned my down to 3.54 because in real-game benchmark there's only about 5% difference in frames between 3.54 and 3.84

I was playing unreal with the 260MHz bus and the 5:4 ratio (thus 208 MHz) and the system crashed. I assumed that the problem was the RAM (since the chip was not getting too hot according to the Asus Probe). So I lower the RAM to 3:2 (173MHz) and it worked.

So I have a choice now between:
1. 260MHz bus and 173MHz RAM (3:2 ratio) or maybe even a higher bus rate
2. 250MHz bus and 200MHz RAM (5:4 ratio)

Which do you think would be faster and more reliable? Right now I have it set to 250MHz and 5:4 since I think that would be best. Of course I could try 300MHz and 3:2 ratio, but I'm not that adventurous.

I tested the various options and here is what I came up with using PCMark2002.

CPU Score Memory Score HDD Score Temp at Idle
Default2.4GHz CPU200MHz RAM 4377 6394 485 40C
OverClock 30%3.14GHz CPU173MHz RAM 4851 6168 498 49C
250MHZ FSB/320MHZ RAM3GHz CPU200MHz RAM 5438 6968 498 43C

Unfortunately, the table doesn't line up, but I hope you can understand it.

UMM, why are your scores sooo low. I get way higher score at default. Don't use AI overclock, overclock manually, the AI overclock automatically set FSB:MEM ratio to 3:2 Manually you can use 5:4 which probably is ideal to your moderate overclock

I don't know why my "scores soo low." What should they be at? The computer seems fast to me, but I do some CPU intensive math in Excel and will take everything I can get.

And I have chosen to use my manual settings, obviously, since they are much faster.

Don't bother with harddrive score, you should be getting about 7500-8000 cpu mark, and for memory are you using dual channel? Because if you're not you really should, there could be as big as 50% performance difference in some applications.

So why am I not getting 7500-8000 CPU Mark?

I don't know if I am running dual channel. My motherboard supports it, I have two 256MB DIMMs in there, but I can't find a setting to set dual channel. I assume the motherboard does it automatically.

I don't think you're using Dual Channel, in your motherboard there should be 4 dimm slots, and 2 different colors, use 1 of the colors, for example if you plug the first dimm in blue slot, plug the 2nd piece of ram in the other blue slot. For CPU are you sure you have hyperthreading enabled in the bios?

So why is my computer not running up to speed?

The only thing I can think of is that my HD is almost full and very fragmented. That could possibly hurt the HDD score, but would that affect the CPU score?

I set Performance Mode to Turbo and the results improved:

CPU Score Memory Score HDD Score
5921 7317 485

BTW, what does turbo do?
