My system spec is below.

I have two 120mm fans in my Antec Sonata Case, and the standard AMD heatsink/fan with AC3.

My room temp is around 38 degrees with the CPU around 54 degrees on idle/desktop tasks and closer to 58/59 when extreme use. My last system, an 1800, ran at 38/44.

I thought the barton cores were meant to run cooler!

Should I be concerned by the temps?

Also, is the CM Aero7+ any good. The noise of my AMD cooler is doing my head in, making my Sonata case very noisy (the two 120mm fans barely make a noise).

Thanks in advance.

i can tell you right off the bat, your heatsink is the problem.. the aero-7 is ohk, but i would look at the Thermalright SLK800/SLK900, the Swiftech MCX462... the Aero7 is supposed to be ohk, I just don't think its anything special - the fan is loud, so the cooling you get can be attained by many other heatsinks with fans just as loud.

Thanks for that, I kinda thought it might be. I just don't want a jet engine replacing it.

I take it from what you say the heatsinks you mentioned are comparatively quiet...

well i don't blame you - thats actually one of the reasons i started watercooling. as for the heatsinks i mentioned, they're not necessarily quieter, i mean that really depends on the fan being used, but these heatsinks ARE able to better handle heat dissipation, and as such you can use slower-running, lower db fans to attain the same results

I just had a look at the thermalright SLK800 at overclockers and it certainly looks the business (though a bit pricey!).

Are the papst fans as quiet as everyone says?

yeeah it is a nice heatsink, but the price is worth it..

umm, papst fans are all they're made up to be - they're individually ballanced for longevity and quietness... but you can shave some $$ off of that by checking out some Panaflo fans

Cheaper solution would be the Vantec Aeroflow, little advanced heatsink that has a copper base insert, very easy to install, and uses the Y.S. tech TMD fan so runs quiet. It should be pretty cheap under 30US with fan.

I contacted overclockers.co.uk for a suggested fan for the thermalright.

He replied suggesting that I buy the CM Aero 7+ instead - I hadn't even mentioned it. He explained that it gave really good cooling with low noise.

As the Aero 7+ is almost half the price of the thermalright and fan - is he simply the worlds worst salesman or is he right?

I'm confused!

Aero 7+ is really bad compare to the SLK800U can't even say if it has half the performance of SLK800U with smart case fan.

Thanks for the advice chaps, I've purchased the slk800 and a YS-tech 'silent' 80mm fan, and it should arrive in a couple of days.

I'll let you know what kind of difference it makes.

Well I installed the slk800 with the YS tech silent fan today.

The system temp has a constant 36 on PC alert 4 and the CPU temp shows a fairly constant 52 at idle.

Not the improvement I'd hoped for!

Probably a large part of this is down to my choice of fan -the YS Tech runs at only 1850 rpm, but it IS almost silent (which is what I wanted). I suppose I could have gone for something with a bit more oomph, but the noise from my last fan (which ran at 5400rpm) was doing my head in.

Interestingly enough, if I use the intake fan at the front of my case, a 120mm antec, it raises the temperature! go figure.

I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it (in the 50's isn't going to kill my system after all!)

Umm the temperature is kinda high, try using a better fan, 1850 is just too low. I'm assuming you're using an 80mm fan, why don't you try the Smart Case fan 2 or the 70mm Y.S. tech TMD fan.

Yeah, I think I'm going to buy another fan, though it's a shame 'cos it IS barely audible.

Does anyone know the stats (CFM/dBA) for the AMD packaged fan? I just want to make sure I don't get another fan that sounds like a helicopter.

I was considering another YS-Tech fan which shifts 47 CFM for 34 dBA, or a Sanyo Denki one that does 32 CFM for 31 dBA.

It's just a pity I have no idea how loud 34dBA is!

I ruled out the smart fan because with the temperature of my system at the moment, it would probably go full tilt permanently, and its top range dBA isn't great.

Any comments on above fans?

Just an update. I've run the computer for a couple of hours under heavy load now and the CPU temp hasn't risen above 55. Not bad considering. And it is sooo quiet! I'm thinking about sticking. I have a stable temp which stays within about 16 degrees of the system temp, and the silence is well worth it. Its the old noise vs temp scenario.

Anyway, thanks for all your help folks.

(Also, as an aside, when initially installing, I forgot to plug in the cpu fan. I was judging temps in the BIOS and saw it rose to 58 degrees after about 10 mins. When I remembered about the fan I just about crapped myself.
It obviously is a v.good heatsink to hold that temp without a fan! My old one would have burnt me out.)

Just a quick P.S.

I went to the thermalright website for installation guide. It says the fan should be blowing down onto the heatsink. Just wondering if turning it so it blows out would make a difference?

Blowing away from the heatsink is just going to make the performance worse. Don't bother trying.

the slk's are the best heatsinks u can buy. I have the slk 800 with a smart case fan 2, and this thing is super cool. The cpu overclocked to 2.4ghz (xp2600), it never gets above 95 degrees. The lowest i ever got it at this speed was 80degrees at idle. Now not even water cooling can do that. The only way ur gonna get performance better than that is with a pelt or phase change.

System: XP2600 oced to 2.4GHZ, 512mb corsair pc2700 oced to 192mhz x2, 36Gb 10k rpm WD SATA, 80GB Western Digital A7N8X Deluxe, Radeon 9800 pro
