Compaq FS740 display trouble

okay well, a few days ago i turned off my monitor because i had some
work to do, but i still wanted to listen to music. i had the monitor
off for about 3 hours, and when i turned it back on, the color and
image of the monitor was set askew and gives it a kind of trippy
effect. now ive tried everything to fix it, like degauss and
restarting, even turning off the monitor for another three hours and
over night, but nothing has changed, it still has a really weird
color scheme. can anyone please help?

anyone? even if you cant answer, can you give me some confirmation
that you dont know what to do so i can gauge how bad this is? im
still not sure whats going on, we tried dusting out the back of the
monitor, but that didnt do anything. itll probably end up being
cheaper to just get a new monitor.

Check the connection from the monitor to the base unit. Make sure it is
well seated and no pins are bent.

Have you tried it in safe mode? If it works in VGA(ie safe mode), then
try changing to adapter to standard VGA and reboot. Then re-instal the
adapter drivers. Then gradually increase the refresh rate and pixel
rate, one step at a time (important this one - you want to know what
trips it), until you are happy, or things go wrong.

If this does not work then a friendly television repair man may be able
to help you. Do not poke around inside it yourself, there is enough
poke in the capacitors to kill you and the residual charge can remain
for days.

Otherwise it would be cheaper to get a new monitor. TFT's are not a bad
investment these days, unless you are a high end gamer, when CRT
monitors may be cheaper for the performance.
