Well.. Ive been recently upgrading my computer and I have a 9600 Pro, and along with that a got a epox 8rda+ w/ 2 PC2700 256MB ram sticks running in dual ddr (7-2-2-2.5 I believe). Now im wondering, whats a nice cpu for the value with decent overclockability. Right now im thinking about a Barton 2500+ forom newegg at $85.. I tink that will overclock nicely?

Oh, and I need to know a good, and more importantly, cheap HSF to go along with that. (Im a n00b about the thermal grease, if someone could give me the name of the standard everyone uses, that would be great)

Im not looking for a hardcore overclock, just somethign that will have gotten me more bang for my buck.. I think the 2500+@2.2 is fairly easy?

2500+ with SLK900U and 92mm tornado would be the best for air cooled cpu.

Well.. Even though that heatsink is expensive i might get.. But i dont want to have a fan that sounds like a vacuum in my case.. Any quieter, yet effective solution in terms of fans?

Speeduk did this, made it quieter, 2x80mm Smart Case Fan 2, he turn the speed down to 3000rpm, and they're pretty much quiet.

Well.. I heard those good overclocking 1700+ are hard to find now? Is the one thats good available at newegg? Also, and if anyone knows a HSF thats a little more economical than that $41 one just for the heatsink, i'd appreciate it.

Pick up a Barton 2500+ and put on the Speeze 5F263B1M3 HSF. It's $7 +$5 shipping at NewEgg. It runs about 5 degrees cooler than my Volcano 7 and is a lot quieter (2500 rpm). Honestly, you can't go wrong with this one, although I don't know how it handles overclocking.

Forget the 1700! A barton at 2300mhz is faster than a 1700 @ 2460mhz! And yeah the best air cooling solution that isnt loud at all is the 900-u with 2 80mm smartfans @ 3,000rpm side by side. Takes a good 7c off of temps compared to my 90mm 60cfm fan!

Oh yeah speed what were the temp difference between 92mm Tornado and 2x80mm Smart Case Fan 2 on the SLK900U?

Yes the 2500+ is bad azz for under $100. You have to remember that processor was $299 when it first hit the floor. It is an awsome overclocker. The 512k cache is a nice bonus also.

You forget that it's half the price. It's up to you, FEW extra MHz or marks in a bench, for double the price?

AX7 requires really loud fan to work well. Actually to be exact, at least Smart Case Fan 2 on max rpm.
