Just got my Barton 2500+ tonite. I am only the second guy in my city to get a piece!!! I booted in, ran Sandra to verify if it was indeed a Barton  , re-booted and hit 2250MHz (180*12.5) straight off at 1.75V. I am using the stock HSF for now and the temps are not that bad. 45C Idle and 52C Full Load with stock HSF at 3900rpm. If i enable Q-Fan, then with the HSF at 2800rpm the temp shot up a little with the Full Load going upto 56C.

I did try 184*12.5=2300MHz, but right now my KT400 is holding me back from getting more out of the chip. I am using 2*256MB DDR333 setup. I am getting a single stick of DDR400 in a couple of days. I'll post the results later. Right now at 2250MHz, i get a Sandra score better than 3200+!!

Just posting here to share! I dont know when was the last time i was so excited about an upgrade.

And, speeduk, tnx for ur generous offer man!

LOL...Hi scotty, i dont intend to kill my chip. Do u think 56C is hot enough to kill a chip? I have SETI@Home running in the background all the time. So with the HSF at 2800rpm i get 53C. If i disable Q-Fan, i get around 51C with SETI runnning. Its only when i am running Prime95 that the temp hits 56C and that is not always. It stays at 56C for a few minutes and falls back to 53C.

So do u think that is good enough to damage the chip? u think i shud disable Q-Fan? i can live with Q-Fan disabled, coz the max speed of the stock HSF is 3900rpm. So its not too much of a bother noise-wise.

Oh I never used that Q-fan crap, I think you should disable that, I mean the stock fan can't be that loud, no matter how loud it is i mean you can't compare with 92mm Tornado or 120mm Delta.

Hey mask. So glad you got one of these cool chips m8. And your temps are high. Remember at stock voltage, anything upto 70C is what AMD says is fine, and the actual temp the bios or sandra gives you is at least 10C off.

As you go up the voltages, you need to controll the temperature. At 1.75v, its best to keep it under 55c at all times. At 1.85 under 50C is a good idea.

I've settled for whatever mine does on stock voltage, that way I can have a nice quiet pc and cool temps. It just so happens mine does 2300mhz on stock voltage!

Oh and one other thing. When you get a board that does 200mhz fsb, don't forget that running the chip @ 2250 (196x11.5) means the chip will need more voltage. If I lower my fsb to 190mhz, I can drop the voltage a bit.

HMmm, like i said, i can live without the Q-Fan. u r right, the stock fan is not that loud at all. And i am not even using any thermal paste. I know i have to scrape off the thermal pad on the HSF, but the pad that was there on the HSF that came with my 1700+ was much better than the thermal paste i normally use.

Anyways, i'll be getting my DDR400 the day after. So till then, i'll settle at 2250MHz. Tnx for ur suggestion.

Tnx m8. i'll disable Q-Fan and keep the full load temp at 53C. Anyways, i am left with no money after this Barton and DDR400  . SO it'll be sometime before i get a nForce2 mobo[sad]. Actually, i was saving all my money to get a P4 2.4Ghz with P4P800.

But this Barton offer was so tempting i cudnt resist. Here is why:
2000+ costs Rs.3900, which is US$83
2200+ costs Rs.4350, which is US$93
2400+ costs Rs.5250, which is US$112
2600+ costs Rs.6600, which is US$140 - all T-breds. (One Rupee is about US$47.)

And i got my Barton 2500+ for Rs.5450, which is US$116!!! Less than a 2600+ T-bred and only a tad more than a 2400+ T-bred. Can u believe that? i dont think many of the distributors know how to tell a barton from a T-Bred  . Good for me!

Asus and MSI are the only 2 nForce2 boards available here now. Epox has very recently launched their distribution network here and only thier Intel boards are avialable as of now. By the time i have saved enough money, if the 8RDA3+ is released, i'll buy that. Or i think i'll get a A7N8X Deluxe. its still a 50-50 between A7N8X Deluxe and K7N2 Delta ILSR. Luckily i am finally getting Kingston Hyper-X DDR400 in a couple of days.

I have disabled Q-Fan and the temp as expected dropped a little. During the day the Full Load temp is 51C now and during night it is only 49C.

All temp taken from MBM5. The CPU temp is the same with BIOS, MBM5 and Asus Probe. But, Sisoft Sandra shows my CPU temp as 62C and so does the "Sensor 3" of MBM 5. What reading is this?

Yup, i think so. I removed the thermal pad and applied some local thermal paste. It does not seem to have made any difference to the Full load temperature though.

Not much! I had asked for Kingston Hyper-X and instead i got Kingston Value RAM. i returned it back. So now with that money i am planning to get a nForce2 mobo. i was just going thru the THG review of the nForce2 mobos. Its a tough decision to choose one mobo.

THG awarded Gigabyte GA-7NNXP and DFI LANParty II the top slot. I dont know yet if these are available here. Then there is Epox, but i browsed thru the Epox website and i did not find any of their mobos with SoundStorm! Do u know if they have SoundStorm or not?

And the boards that i know are available here - the ASUS A7N8X Dlx and MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR; now this is a tough choice here too. Asus provides Silicon Image SATA RAID, but MSI has Promise RAID controller and with this i cud have a IDE HDD in RAID too. (First of all i dont know a thing about RAID, let alone setting it up  ). but still....

Then, MSI seems to provide the Power connectors for the SATA too. Am not sure if ASUS does that too.

choices, choices....its a tough day ahead of me

Well from my experience, the A7N8X did 230FSB without break of sweat. With stock cooling and a lot of air-flow you should be able to get that, or simply change cooling for the north bridge to be safe.

the MSI Delta nForce2 doesn't seem to handle more than 213, I tried it because it was cheaper than the Asus.
