I'm thinking about attaching my ramsinks to my 9800pro again, but didn't want to make any obvious marks on the card, so if i use Arctic Silver 3 epoxy to attach the ramsinks, when i remove the ramsink, is it possible to remove any, all traces of Arctic silver 3?

Remove the traces? LOL!

How are you going to remove the ramsinks first?

Stick the card in the freezer for 20 minutes. Take it out and try to pry the heatsinks off and hope it doesnt take the memory with it. Put card back in system and hope it still works.

Well I have removed ramsinks before, it's just that i can't get rid of all the thermal epoxy left on the ram, i guess sand-paper wouldn't work, tried rubbing alcohol didn't work. So, i think i'll just have to live without ramsinks, and keep adding more airflow.

Use a qtip and rubbing alcohol to soften up the resin, then do as Crash said and scrape gently and slowly with a razor blade.

scraping will remove the labeling on the memory, so i guess its still going to be obvious!

That doesn't really matter, i mean if you keep your fingers on the memory for a couple hours the labels will come off,(Video card must be on).

And you have attempted this finger on ram trick for a few hours... why? We have all felt up our video cards at one time or another, for our significant others claim we love our computers more than them, anyway, and at time we do, but two hours seems excessive.

I read somewhere that the best way is to apply AS3/5 thermal compound before applying the addhesive and removing it would be easier. Already have your sinks glues on? That's a shame...

I know what everyone's been wondering - 2^33634943-1 IS NOT PRIME. Now, wasn't that worth running Prime95 for a month to know?

i use screws to attach all my sinks and such. If you look closely at the pcb you will see (especially arround the ram) lots of holes seemingly just filled with solder with no components (they are about 2-2.5mm in diameter) if you melt the solder away you can mound stuff from them (thats how i'm mounting ramsinks on my 9500).

ok... you're crazy. I'm not taking that risk on my 5900.

not really if you see what i'm talking about you will realise there is little risk and it is easy to cover up after the fact (for rma).

But you understand what i'm talking about? cause i know it sounds crazy but really its one of the easiest ways to mount ramsinks with screws. Leme see if i can host some pics to show you what i am talking about (although i don't have my ramsinks on there yet).

I've never messed with applying heatsinks on RAM using a thermal apoxy or compound. I've used the HS's with the thermal tape before. To get rid of the leftover compound, is it safe to use Goof Off or Goo Gone or would they damage the DDR chip? They work awesome for getting compound off of CPU's and their heatsinks. Speaking of which, using a copper cleaner, as opposed to anything else, works wonders for copper heatsinks. About affixing the heatsinks to the DDR chips on video cards. Why not use a non-permanent compound and very thin rubber bands to hold the heatsinks on?

Mineral oil works well but if you are willing to put in some elbow grease cold water works fine (key word cold).

That's a piii heatsink. Durring my break i will cut up another piii heatsink and make ramsinks out of it. Either that or hack up some .5 by 1 inch copper slabs.
