I'm new to overclocking, so please bear with me if I ask a silly question.

first off, heres my setup

P4 2.4b 533MHz FSB
MSI 645E Max-U Mobo
512MB DDR333 Ram
GeForce3 ti200 64MB

I can go into the BIOS and increase my FSB, and can get my proc up to 2.8Ghz, but then my RAM has to be set at 5:4(?) which gives me slower memory (310) as opposed to 333.

Would I be better off with a stick of DDR400, at which I could run the RAM at higher speeds? And how far over spec can RAM run, or is that trial and error?

Would increasing the DIMM voltage help with this? How much can it be increased?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, your CPU uses 133FSB and your ram supports up to 166 and probably more with increased Vdimm, so u don't need new ram. What cooling are you using on your CPU?

-Intel PIV 2.4C @ 3.84G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Gold 2x256 3700EL memory @ 256mhz 2.5-3-3-7 -Sapphire 9800pro @ 490/780 -SB audigy -80G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 Ultra ATA-133 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

At the moment, I am using the stock Intel HSF. I also have a cooling fan & heatsink on my GF card, as well as two additional case fans. At normal speed, my CPU temp runs around 28-29C (82-84F) at idle.

As for increasing the vCore or vDIMM, what are safe limits, and when do you actually start to increase them?

Also, how long should prime95 be able to run error free for a system to be considered stable?

Since you have generic ram I wouldn't recommend vdimm more than 2.7V, you increase them when ur system is unstable. Prime95 should be ran at least 6 hrs to be considered stable.
