This is my first post here and I am thinking of building an O/C P4 system as well. I was thinking of a 2.4 or 2.6 or 2.8 in a Gigabyte GA-8PENXP or GA-8IPE100 Pro2 or GA-8IG1000 Pro along with PC4000 DDR from Corsair or Kingston.
Any comments? And one question nobody asks is how long will my cpu, ram, system last at FSB 225 or 250 MHz. Will it shorten my systems lifespan, and if so how bably.
Cos then I will run it at stock speeds.
P.S Is a Geforce FX 5600 Ultra 256MB a good buy or should I get something faster to match the system. I like to get +18000 in 3DMark2001SE (20000 would be perfect).
20K will be impossible without some serious heavy overclock on your CPU and Graphics card. I did 22k on my system but that's when my graphics card's clocked at max which is more than 110mhz more than the original core clock.
My PC4000 is working fine if you just wanted a general answer about PC4000. I was thinking about getting PC4200 as I though my cpu might do 3.2g. But even at 1.725v she is still not 100% stable. Close but no cigar. I'll just have to be happy with what I have. Which is really good.
Hey don't feel sorry for me. I am very happy with it. I mean I have a system most people can't buy. O/C a 2.4 to 3.0 is a very good O/C especially running the memory at 1:1 250. Maybe when the prices come down some more I will try a malaysian chip. If they are still around as I think Intel is changing the 2.4c to thwart us overclockers. I don't know why. We would be buying AMD if not for this nice oportunity.
On the subject of "how long will my overclocked cpu last". It depends. If you haven't upped the vcore much and the chip is running cool. I don't see why it would not ;ast as long as any other intel CPU. If you up the vcore considerably and or run the chip hot. Who knows how long it will last. Could be a couple of years or a couple of days. Thats the chance you take.
The FX series is what can I say, a failure? or should i simply say they're pieces of sh*t with great cooling. Radeon 9600pro is a great card for overclocking if you get some better GPU cooling, the 9800 non-pro is the best deal if you're not planning to deplete your bank account. I didn't mention the 9700 series because they're officialy discontinued, but you can still find them it's just hard.
Actually I haven't got the 9800 yet. Should be here any day. I'm planning on changing the bios to 9800 pro if I have the right memory. I will be selling my 9500 non pro on ebay. If anyone is interested. Let me know.
I don't think i'll go too far with OC since i'm currently kinda broke, and my dad won't help me because he said I've spent enough on my computer alrdy. I wanted a watercooling kit, but my mom's like nooooo, if there's a leak you'll kill your computer then you'll be screwed. I can't argue with my mom she's too dumb to admit she's wrong.
Just checking my bank balance, and trying to calculate my income, and trying to calc' my expeneses etc.etc.etc...
and it looks like I will only have enough money for a PC in Jan/Feb 2004. Thats about R11000 (South Arican Money), and well just to give you guys a clue. In South Africa a P4 2.4 is R1600 and an FX5600 is R2000 and a FX5900 Ultra is R6000 and a P4 3.2 is R5500. My point is that at the end of Feb2004 wont a athlon64 be a better by. R11000 is like 1400US Dollars.
