is my computer too hot?

Hi guys,

I've been having this problem with my system getting around 60degrees celsius and then rebooting on its own. I have a volcano 7+ usually running on medium setting. I have a non-OCed Athlon XP2000+ with ECS K7S5A mb. I have 3 HDs attached. I have 5 case fans..2 intake and 2 exhaust with a sideblower. I'm wondering what could be the reason why it gets so hot and what I could do about it. If it's okay to go over 60degrees on the XP2000, then how do I go about overriding the reboot from the mb BIOS. TIA!

Sounds like the drives are overheating. That's probably causing the system instability.

60*C is not good for the CPU either. So, Yes, your computer is overheating.

but the intake fans are right over the HD bracket in my case. Could it be that the thermal compound I'm using isn't good enough or wearing off? Would it be better if i leave the sidewindow open? thanks

From your description it sounds as if you have 3 fans blowing in and only 2 blowing out. IF that’s the case, then you take one of the fans and have it so you have 3 blowing out. However I don't think that’s what is causing it to overheat.

Have you tried resetting the heatsink? Applied thermal paste? Replaced the thermal pad?

no i have not tried to replace the thermal paste......and i do not use a thermal pad, since my cpu isnt OC'ed I really didnt understand why its running so hot and need to invest in a better hsf. I think i will reverse the sideblower so that it sucks air out. Would cleaning the hsf help that much? Cuz I might take it apart and do that too if I was going to reapply the thermal paste. Thanks for ur replies.

yeah, cleaning the heatsink wouldn't be a bad idea. Just take it out, remove the fan, and soak it in some hot soapy water for 5 minutes. Then rinse well.

Thanks for all ur help. I think I will try to do that first and then see how my temps are going. This is one of the many reasons my next system will be pentium based, so it doesnt run as hot as AMD. Thanks again!

AMD & Intel put out about the same amount of heat nowadays.

What it sounds like is:

A) the heatsink was jarred and is not making flat contact with the CPU die. Take it out, clean the heatsink, apply some good Arctic Silver 3 or Ceramique and replace the heatsink, making sure it's flat against the CPU die.

B) the fans are being blocked. Make sure they are free of dust, and have at least 12" of space in front of them.

C) your running your computer in a sauna. Take it out dammit.

Oh, and just so you know, AMDs used to run hot, but that's now in the past. It's a non-issue now. Don't be drawn in by all the myths nowadays.
