Can anyone please explain what the numbers that follow a memory stick description mean? As an example:

PC2700 512MB 2-2-2 LOW LATENCY

Just point me to a place where I can read about it or explain it if you will.

PC4000 3-4-4-8
2x256mb DDR 2-3-2

What does 3-4-4-8 and 2-3-2 mean in reference to those memory modules?

My understanding is they are delays between reads and writes of data in the memory. CAS stands for column address strobe, and ras stands for Row address strobe. So basically they are clock cycle delays before certain memory functions can be carried out.


If it isn't a P6 then it isn't a procesor

this is from a past post (crashman i think)

in your case its 2,2,2 so that means A,B,C

"Memory timings = A,B,C,D

A= tCAS = Time Delay (t) Column Access Strobe (CAS) (Pulse Duration in cycles)

B = tRCD = Time Delay (t) RAS Active to CAS Active

C = tRP = Time Delay (t) RAS Precharge

D = tRAS = Row Access Strobe (Pulse Duration in cycles)

The first latency, tCAS, is time delay specified before the memory controller will send out the next instruction. It is the wait time for the CAS pulse signal to finish. If it or any other delay is too short there will be corrupted output data at the end of the read.

tRCD is the delay between the cycle sets.

tRP is the charge given to refersh/deactivate the row.

tRAS is the total active to de-activate time."

Your ram must at least match your FSB value, but an AMD system will benifit more from lowering timings than increasing the memory bus beyond the FSB.
It's the other way around for Intel systems.

So you'll want to raise the memory bus speed as high as possible with your Intel system.
PC4000 3-4-4-8 will run better than
PC3200 2-2-2-6 in your system.

Hey, you have the only Athlon XP2500+ I've heard of that actually runs beyond 2500MHZ.

What is the minimum cooling you'd recommend for that P4 overclock?
I'm unfamilliar with overclocking the 800MHZ FSB P4's.
