I was planning to build a computer with the Intel p4 2.4 533fsb cpu retail boxed (Northwood). This means it has a clock cycle of 133. The Mobo Im getting can support pc 2700 ram (Asus P4GE-V). Im an AMD man and do not know every little oc detail with the intel chips. Im just wondering if you up the clock cycle on this CPU from 133 to 166, which would give about 3ghz. Is this a workable goal?

Yes, 3.0 Ghz is very obtainable but PC3200 memory would get you further. You might not hit 3.6 Ghz on air cooling but probably 3.2 Ghz.

Why do you want the 845G chipset? Do you need integrated graphics? Also, 845G would handicap you with single channel DDR. Why not get the 865G for about the same price and get dual chanel DDR. (Of course, I don't know which motherboards are the best examples).

3.2?! are you sure with 2.4B? most of those things struggles to get to 3.0G

Why 2.4B? 2.4C is sooo much more overclockable, and it doesn't cost much more except you need to buy expensive ram but other than that it's soo much better than the 2.4B.

You're right. 3.2 Ghz is a stretch. According to overclockers.com's CPU database the average overclock is 3.069 Ghz so I wouldn't call 3.0ghz a struggle either.

There are about 15 people that made it to 3.2 Ghz on air but that's a pretty small percentage of the 176 entries.

Im building a machine for my client and working on a very frugle budget. The machine is just going to be a proxy sever for their Starband ISP since starband service will not work with routers.

I'd still consider 865G since it's about the same money and higher performance, just in case the PC gets used for some other purpose.

If it's just a proxy server why does it need to be overclocked?

You talking to me, Scottchen?

I didn't ask anything except why Addiarmadar wants to overclock a proxy server.
