I have been running a 1700+ at 166 fsb for several months now, but I am about to order some 3200 ram. How far can I expect to push the fsb of my 1700+? I am using an SK7 with a medium strength 80mm fan. I have been running the cpu at 1833 MHz. If I try to keep it in the ~1800 MHz ballpark, but bring the fsb up, will the cpu get hotter? Will it need more VCore? I have read that total CPU speed needs VCore... but if I bring the fsb up and move the multiplier down, will heat and VCore be about the same?

No increasing FSB and multiplier affect the CPU the same, so doesn't matter it doesn't generate more heat from increased FSB, however your N.Bridge does. you got a nice heatsink so with good airflow in the case i'm sure your chip can do 200x12 a good old 2400mhz.

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.51G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 270mhz 2.5-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800pro @ 490/780 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Using a higher FSB means that the cpu has to do more work in any given time. So in general, it will need more voltage and thus create more heat. I tried my barton at 184x12.5 (2300mhz) and it only needed 1.6v to be prime stable. At 200x11.5 (2300mhz) it needs 1.63v to be prime stable. My processor is prime stable at stock speed on an amazing 1.48v volts (1833mhz)!!!

I just be trying to learn some stuff about OC the cpu. Really I don't have to up the core voltage to get the increase? I have 1700 as well. If I ever get this stupid 2500 to work in my mobo I will be able to OC it even better then this currect chip?

Each chip is different. A 1700 may overclock better than a 2500 or vise versa. Its all about when the cpu was produced and the quality of its core. The latest chips overclock better (in general) than older ones..... So a brand new 2500 will overclock really well compared to an old 1700xp.

Logic tells me that a 2400 would overclock better than a 1700, but is this necessarily true?

Not really. Especially if they are both tbred chips. The lower end chips like the 1700 tend to use the same cores that get used in the higher end ones like the 2400. Simply because most of the cores produced are of a good quality. I tried a 2100 tbred b and a 1700 tbred b. The 1700 went to 2.4ghz and the 2100 only went to 2.3ghz...
