Too much thermal paste?

I think I put a bit too much of the stuff on my CPU. I was getting some erratic behavior and high temps. I took it apart and noticed that the paste had been pushed down and went around the sides of the chip. I cleaned it off and things seem better now. Question is, could that stuff ruin the cpu if it gets around the sides like that? I know, I know, I'm an idiot

What kind of thermal grease, and what CPU do you have?

Some generic silver paste I got at Compusa, and a P4 3.0

P4 you don't have to worry much, as long as their's no thermal grease on the pins and you're fine.
